Last night I had the car idling and was listening to the motor to see exactly where the tapping was coming from. Well, I am looking at the plug wires and notice the metal jacket grounding to the header. I dont mean that the jacket was touching the header, there was a spark jumping from the jacket to the header. Well anyways I just ordered a set of MSD plug wires to see if that will cure this weird problem. Anyone else have the same problem?
Phillip
Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (Phil97SVT)
Yes,I did.The Lt headers are too hot for the stock wires.Basically we're frying them. What we did was put the GM performance wires on with the kevlar socks around them.NO PROBLEMS since we did that.Good Luck.

Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (Phil97SVT)
I'm using the Taylor Fire Sleeves (~$46) from Thunder Racing.com in their Ignition products area. They're rated to 1200 deg. F. I'm also running the Taylor ThunderVolt 10.4mm wires (600 deg. F) with my FLP's and have had no issues. Pic below.

Make sure to get the 1200* socks.
You can find them in Silver or Black from Taylor.
Heat treated fiberglass like firemen wear I believe.
Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (Gary2KC5)
I have an '01 with 9K, and will be doing a header install soon.
1. Can I keep the stock wires and go with the 1200 degree socks
2. Should I upgrade the wires and change the plugs anyway (and use the socks)
Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (Phil97SVT)
I just fried one of my Thundervolts on my headers :cuss I purchased MSD wires today. They have a different designed boot for the plug. I will probably end up getting socks also :(
Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (MiamiDave)
Dave,You have to take the wires off to put on the socks,so why not change them. While your there check your plugs,it's good time to change them too.

Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (MiamiDave)
Well without starting an ew thread, what are good wires and plugs?
I have always liked MSD and Magnacore wires and NGK plugs. I ran NGK plugs on my Turbo 4 banger and had awesome luck putting down 375 at the wheels. I went with MSD wires on my corvette because they were one of the cheapest ones with the best quality.

Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (MiamiDave)
Dave, everyone has their own opinion on what is BEST.The TR's are very good.I have also had good luck with the AC's.Just make sure you get a plug that is hot enough for your setup.
With the wires,if money is no object get the Nology($350),but if you want value use the GM performance, Taylor or any of the others. But make sure you use the kevlar heat socks esp. if you have headers. It will prevent a lot of problems later on. :yesnod:
Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (yellowvette01)
I learned the hard way.. Tried various Wires ( Taylor ,GM ,MSD,JBA etc..) All with Cool Sox ..All fried on my longtubes.
Simple solution was i installed the metal sleeve that comes on a stock C5 with factory wires..As an added precaution i installed Cool sox over the metal sleeves.
I just did a run to Palm Springs , 115 Deg weather and hard driving..Wires are still working great.
The factory metal sleeves are like $4 ea..a good investment..you can still fit your MSD, Taylor or factory wires in them.
Re: Spark plug wires grounding to headers????? (MiamiDave)
When you order The factory wires they do NOT come with the metal sleeves..The sleeve is a seperate part #. If you have the sleeves , you can certainly re-use them.
