2000 coupe. Randomly begins to "miss", back fire, feels like either converter is locking and unlocking, or dropping in and out of overdrive, volt gauge will bounce, temp gauge pegs on hot but car is not overheating. Car has done this fully warmed up, and at partial temp. Also when slowing down, getting ready to stop, car has shut off without a warning, but restarts and then runs fine. Any recommendations on what to check first? Thanks
Jeff
Car's back, haven't had a chance to drive it yet, other than a mile or so back to my house. Apparently there was a intermittent problem with a temp sensor and wiring. New sensor, new wire, routed as far from the headers and they could, and back on the road. Mechanic said the backfiring was due to the car thinking it was overheating when the temp gauge pegged.

Wow, could be a lot of things. Bad ground connection, intermittant fuel pump, etc... do like 69 suggested. First thing is to check your codes and post them. That's the starting point.
I had some issues with my electrical system, a check of the car history showed the complaint going back several years from the comments at various GM dealers. I had many codes and computer system fauilures showing up. Finally I had no charging voltage. Problem was no feedback voltage from the starter terminal to the alternator. Starter terminal block was cracked and not making proper electrical connection for the feedback wire. New starter and new battery and the problem was solved. Symptom was erratic charging voltage mostly within spec, but occaisionally a low of 8.5 volts and high of 15 volts which drove the computers nuts.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. I've got a warranty on the car, but only till December 7th. Bought it from a local dealer that buys and sells Corvettes, they're supposed to have it checked out for me this week, but figured it anyone's experienced similar problems it might make troubleshooting to smoother
