Today I changed my oil on my C5 2002, for the second time. I actually put it up on the rhino ramps last night, jacked the rear higher, and removed the oil drain plug and filter so it could drain overnight.
This morning I filled the new filter with oil, replaced the drain plug and then put in six quarts of oil. After about 5 minutes to allow this to settle into the pan, I started the car...42lbs of pressure and no leaks.
I the took the car off of the ramps and parked it on a nice flat surface. After waiting another 5 minutes for everything to settle, iI checked the oil and it read low(complaint number one..I have such a hard time getting a clesn accurate reading off of the dipstick. Seems to smear a little. Hard to see exactly where the true mark is.) I added one/half quart more...6 1/2 qts total..per the book...and let that settle. Well it still seems a bit low on the lousy dipstick..but I will not add anymore. (Complaint number two..when the DIC says OIL LOW how much should you add?...a quart?...a 1/2 quart?)
Please relate your experiences as I need help in ensuring this critical function is being performed right. Thanks Corvette lover's and fellow friends
Someone mentioned on CF that you can use fine sandpaper to roughen up the dip stick surface (near the area where the holes are), and this helps the reading of the level.
When the rear is jacked up higher than the front, such that the oil drains fully, I find that I need almost 7 quarts of oil to get to the full mark when reading the oil as prescribed in the user's manual, i.e. warm engine.
oldvetter is correct, the low oil light comes on when u are 1 quart low on oil. I have always changed my own oil, and i always put in a full 7 quarts. the theory behind it is, if ur gonna drive ur car a little harder than usual put in the extra court as it is normal for all engines to burn "some" oil. although as i can see from this forum many people complain of oil consumption problems.
