There is a seal in that valley cover that keeps the oil in the crank case and it is likely bad. Remove the sensors and replace BOTH seals. I would ALSO make sure that you PCV valve , the piping and fittings are all in proper working order. You would have to have excessive plow by or poor PCV action to get that much oil in the pocket.
Did you have ant Knock Sensor DTC Codes prior to disassembly???
NOTE! The Knock Sensors has a very specific TORQUE that you need to reinstal them.
If the cover seal is in good shape, i would jjust resue it. Its an aluminum frame with an embossed rubber sel on both sides. They are pretty resiliant.
Looking at the pictures more closely,,, IT COULD HAVE been oil from the sensor leak but, were you leaking/spraying that much oil???? That sensor hole is raised above the plate

Ahh yes! I can see from your pic the sensor is indeed mounted on a lower plane. I certainly don't think it would leak badly enough to spray either. As always, great info, Bill!
