I no this is an old topic .Most of the vettes I owned were C3, but found this 01 low mileage, 6 sp. conv. at a good price. Question, put key in dash lites up, everything ok ,push clutch in ,hear relay turn key to start can here starter relay , then dash lites go out. security lite goes out to does not flash. let key go then all dash lites come back on and security is on. I here everything I should be hearing but still no start. Then if I push start and pop clutch starts rite up. Then it all rite for a while. Tell me if i'm wrong but does it sound like a bad spot in the starter somewhere .Thank Joe
I checked codes only had 2 codes come up a (AO -LDCM) it said U1016H and 1 in AI- RPCM I reset both of them and still nothing . But everything else has no codes
I agree! Once you insert the key and the security light goes out, the PCM is happy with the VATS resistor in the key which is read by the KEY SENSOR on the ignition switch. Once it is out, and the key remains in the ignition, it SHOULD NOT come back on.
IF,,,,,,,,,,,, It comes back on, you, You lost the contact with the key and the sensor.
Reevaluate the security light and make sure that you dont have pounds of stuff on your key ring. That can unseat the key/sensor.
What is your battery condition. Obtain a DC Volt meter. Read battery voltage directly on the battery. Have an assistant attempt to crank the engine and you monitor battery voltage directly on the battery terminals. It should NOT drop below 10 VDC.
checked voltage 13.7 , nothing on key push started car and it started rite up . now it seems to be ok. but it will probably do it again in another couple of weeks. that's why I thought it mite be a starter problem I can hear the relay clicking on the pass side when I turn key. when I crank voltage goes down to 11.2
Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, C5s are well known to have defective starter SOLENOIDS.
The symptom is: When you crank the engine, the statrer does NOT respond. IF, you WHACK the solenoid/starter, and it cranks, thats a PRIME example of a defective solenoid.
You can replace the solenoid. Its about $35-$40 instead of the completer starter. Problem is, you have to remove the starter to replace the solenoid.
There have been cases where the main connections on the solenoid have been loose/corroded/burnt and that will cause the same issues.
Its fairly easy to make sure that the statrer solenoid wires are clean and tight. NOTE! Make sure that you remove the NEGATIVE battery terminal.
Bill , thanks for the info.I been playing with corvettes for along time . First C 5 I owned. not up on them, but learning a lot. I bought a new starter a month ago when it happened the first time. Didn't put in yet but now I am . Thanks again Joe
PS just went out and it started rite up , o well
