Default Pulley or Programmer???

I've got about $400 to spend this weekend and I'm wondering what I should purchase for my 2000 automatic. I've added corsa exhaust and MTI "ram-air". What would give me more hp a MTI underdrive pulley(which they claim can add 9rwhp) or a Hypertech power programmer? If you have any other ideas for cheap hp gains I'd love to hear them. Thanks

Put the $400 away, save some additional expendable funds for some real mods! $400 want get you much for the Corvette, remember performance is expensive.

I understand that. I'm saving for a super charger. Thats $9000 but I want to play with the the car a little now. Even if in 9-12 months I purchase the super charger and make these little mods a waste of money. I'm going to put $400-$600 into the car this weekend. I'm looking for some advice on what I should purchase. Programmer, pulley, ect.... What will give me the most hp?

The pulley will probably give you more power but I seriously doubt if you will feel any difference in performance with only a 9 RWHP increase. Not to mention the amount of work that has to be done to install a pulley(you have to remove the steering rack). Pulleys are usually installed when you are swapping cams. I am with Al save your money and install a good converter and 3.42 gears, this will give a really meaningful increase in performance. A Donaldson Blackwing or Vortex air box will give you bet. 10 and 20 RWHP and can be bought for under $400.00. Check the C5 Parts for Sale forum sometimes you can get a really good deal on a used rear and converter and other performance parts.

98 A4
Powerloaded
Donaldson Blackwing
172 t.stat
Pro Torque 2400
3.42 gears

If I were you I would look at the parts for sale here on the forum and see if you can get A Hypertechlll programmer. I got mine used for $200.00 and I am really pleased with the way my car feels now. Improved shift points and firmness in the shifts. It was easy to use and you can always go back to stock when you get your supercharger.

A pulley is the LAST thing you should consider as a stand-alone mod!!!
As stated above, you have to remove the entire front of the engine bay--
Drain all the coolant, take off the hood, pull out the radiator, fans, and THEN there's the steering rack...which necessitates taking off both the front wheels, and if you've not done it before, the rack ALONE is one of the nightmares of working on a C5--it's a bitch, to say the least...
You're talking about a mod that most people do as an afterthought when doing a heads/cam job, because like said above, all the aforementioned things are already out of the car.
To put this into perspective, the only things you'd have to remove to put a new CAM in the car at that point would be the water pump, PS pump, timing chain/cover, and alt bracket...cause you're right there...it would take less than an hour to pull those...
I agree with Al and the others--save longer & get a bigger mod,

I think WallstAL is right, but if you must spend the $, get a Powerloader II. :)

Been There ...Money just burning a hole in your pocket and your havin' a mod attack...RIGHT? :yesnod:

For an automatic there are some nice "lite" mods you can to enhance the SOTP feel. The #1 mod in my book and I have done every bolt on so far is .....the Transgo shift kit. You will LOVE it. Neck snapping shifts with absolute accuracy and NO MORE SLOPPY shifts between2-3 and 3-4.
The kit is about $109 and an experienced trans tech will charge you about $175 fo the install....Trust me well worth it !!! :D

Another mod you might do is a Throttle body bypass and a 160/172 thermostat. Get that car running cooler you can pick up 2-3 h.p ebry little bit helps!:smash:

When your ready to complete the exhaust system ..pull the cats and add a set of TPIS long tube headers...Now you will feel the kick. The revs will come up faster and the sound is ....awesome. There's lots more but if your on a budget these few will give you a temporary cure to your attack. We have all been throughit...It never ends :chevy

Thanks for the info. It seems that everyone agrees. You recomended a transgo shift kit. Well I hate to be stupid but I'm new to vettes and am not sure what it is or how it would increase my hp or 1/4. Thanks Eric
