Default What Extra stuff to get while Replacing Head Gasket

Hi all

I've got 02 Z06 with 124k miles.

need head gasket replacement. So I took it in to the shop and getting it done.

What is common items that you would change while the head is out?

Cam? Retainers? valves? pushrods? rockers?

Looking for something not too expensive but worth it.

Thanks!

If only one head is being remove, then you would need to do any corresponding work on the other head as well. Personally, I would do the valve seals and valve springs.

I agree, seals for sure on both heads. You should also consider an inspection of the valves and seats. They might suggest that they just need to be lapped to keep them in good sealing condition.

Many people say the intake manifold gaskets are reusable. I would go back with new ones after that mileage.

Agree, with that many miles, new valve springs as well. Here's a partial list:
This includes the 2004 valley cover which has a better PVC system than your year. With that many miles, yours may be a bit crudded up. The part numbers are either Summit, or GM. You can get all of it from Summit. I'm not plugging them, but unless you really work it, their prices are pretty good. New lifter trays for sure. Would hate to see a valve spring go and a lifter to rotate. Additionally, i would suggest Comp Cams or Summit rocker trunnions. but, as you can see, your $350 repair is creeping up.

LS6 Valley Cover Included bolts and gasket) 12577927 $99.97
Valve Cover Gaskets (2) 12637683 $39.94
Head gasket set 12498544 $37.97
BTR Platinum dual springs SK001 $289.00
Intake Manifold Gaskets (kit of 8) 12533587 $69.97
exhaust manifold gaskets (2) 12617944 $23.94
ls6 pvc plug 12568011 $9.95
Cylinder head bolts SUM-910210 $48.97
Lifter Trays 12595365 $31.88
Cylinder head machine shop reconditioning (both!!!!) $350.00
NGK Iridium plugs, TR6 $67.12

Make sure the heads don't go back on without being resurfaced! I agree with,k24556. If it's coming apart, do it right, otherwise you'll regret it. Definitely do both heads!

Marty is correct. I got my heads re-surfaced and the valves ground for $350. This included a little polishing of the runners, but not porting, which you don't need unless you are going for HP gains.

Also, you can probably get away with Comp Cam 918 springs if you keep the stock cam. They are $100 less than the BTR's They are a beehive spring like the stock springs(Z06) are.

I would do the oil sender relocate also. Those things go out quite often and are a PIA to change in the stock location.
