I have a single rib rear diff I want to do a rebuild and gear swap on. but its missing the long axle stub, does anyone know if the long one is needed when I send the rear to be rebuilt? or can I use the one in my car now?
what do you mean by "axle stub"? are you talking about the output shafts? You don't theoretically need them to set the gears up properly, but once it's properly shimmed, you would need to take the whole diff apart again to put in either of the shafts. removing the differential from the case won't be easy for the builder since it will need to be done like 10 times. the tool used to remove it uses the shaft.
yeah the output shafts, so I would need the long one, or have my builder get one. I don't want to open it up. I'm having the trans rebuilt and would like them all done together bolted up so I can swap them as a whole unit. thanks!
IMO if you're swapping gears to a stock ratio (2.73, 3.15, or 3.42) don't bother rebuilding your diff and just buy a new or lightly used 3 rib diff.
A good 3.42 3 rib diff can be found for ~$500.
I'm having 4.10s put in for drag racing so its getting a rebuild. I talked to my builder, jason at tdp said he has stock ones he can use or I can get the hardened ones for some extra.

If drag racing I recommend running a 300m on the driverside atleast as this is the one more prone to break, hope that helps.
