I have a 98 coupe and just went out to go for a ride and got the following message " Service Steering Column". The wheel is locked. I thought I heard about a recall for the 2000's about the steering column lock. Is there any way to by-pass this to be able to drive the car??? Any information would be appreciated.
There are many posts about how to "unlock" your car by turning the wheel, banging on it, etc. When (or the dealer) gets it unlocked, check out http://www.C5solutions.com for the bypass. Do it, or check to see if you are part of the GM recall. :smash: BTW, welcome to the Forum! :D
The same thing happened to me a couple of Friday nights ago. I used the info in the forum to unlock mine by appling 12vdc to the lock connector & it unlocked. When I put the connector back together I got the Pull key Wait 10 Seconds. After that all was normal and I went on my way. I ordered the CLB from COH to make sure I don't get stranded again. Mine is a 98 Coupe also, and it not on the service bulletin list. Most occurances of this problem are during the summer time. I have 2 other 98's that had the problem last year but were covered under warrenty. But this one wasn't. See my other post for more info. Good luck. :smash: :smash:
Same thing happened to mine about a month ago. Bad thing about living in a small town is there was not a flatbed wrecker within 50 miles of where I live. Once I finally got it to the dealership (after the wrecker bill cost me nearly $250.00 to have my car moved 4 blocks) they said my VIN number was about 2500 to low to be covered. They had it fixed within a few hours, but managed to break a trim panel and jammed the trim ring around the ignition switch to the point where it hangs leaving the starter engaged while starting the vehicle or if it doesn't release all the way, I have no guages. Thank goodness for extended warranties as they told me it would have cost about $400.00 for the fix. I wonder if the dealership was trying to rip off another customer? The dealership has offered to fix their mistakes, but I lost all trust in them.
Had mine repaired last summer after it locked in my garage. GMPP paid for the repair as mine had just recently run out of the original factory warranty right before it happened. I believe that I was 600 miles over the 36,000. Anyway, I'm wondering what GM is using as a determining factor to decide which cars get recalled. Mine is not on the list either, and I am real curious just what criteria they're using to recall these cars. Seems to me, from what I've read here and other places as well, that all the C5s to date may have the potential to develop this problem. Anybody know how they're deciding who is in and who is out?
