Wondering if anyone else is having problems with the 2002 Z06 Trans.
Mine is popping out of 4th gear. At first it was popping out of 2nd and 6th, too. I took the Hurst out and put back in the stock shfter. Made no difference. Took it to the dealer. The mechanic wanted to replace the trans, but manger and Zone rep turned him down. After talking to a tech at the trans factory, he started with the simple stuff. He claims all he did was set the neutral pin in the front to the shifter. It worked for a while. In fact it worked great. It had been grinding going into 4th on hard/fast shifts about 7 of 10 times, but not after the dealer "fixed" it. Then it did grind going into 4th and now it's popping out again. I put the Hurst back in and set the neutral pin but it did not help. I have looked long and hard and see no adjustments that can be made. I have no idea what setting the neutral pin does, if anything.
Last night I had my son take the console and trim plate off and set the neutral pin while we adjusted the spring tension. Afterward, the neutral gate is nice and free. Before you could feel it catching a little as it moved across the 3-4 area, but this is gone.
Something seems to be loose in the transmission. When it grinds, it seems as though it is not going all the way in, but I am still pressing on it to go in. I do not have the stop bolts in the Hurst, BTW.
Have you taken it back to the dealer? There have been problems with the redesigned synchros, but your symptoms don't sound like the same problems. If you post this same question in the Z06 forum you might get an answer.
Take the car out one day and really BREAK the tranny....then the dealer will have to replace it. Drive it all day without using the clutch...that should really polish it off!!!
But seriously, the dealer has to fix or replace the tranny because it ain't working. Isn't it a *cut & dried* problem when it grinds and pops out of gear?

For real! If mine were popping outta gear and grinding i'd be pitching a MAJOR b!tch until they fixed it - especially if the mechanic said to replace it to begin with!?! :boxing
If they don't want to fix it right, then ask them for a quote to put in the article you're going to write to the newspaper and FOX5 as to why the local dealer won't fix the busted butt trans in your relatively new '02
I do intend to take it back and jump up and down a few times.
I was really wondering if anyone else was experiencing these symptoms and what the fix turned out to be.
What really grabs my butt is that I bought the Z06 thinking that the trans, rear, driveshaft and clutch were all substanially stronger than my 2000 Coupe. I never had grinding gears or popping out of gear problems with it.
Tracy, when is that Z coming in. I can't wait either.
Steve, I have gotten the grind going to 4th. I wish I had a good answer for ya but I don't. I change clutch flued, reset shifter, sounds like you tryed those. On my 01 I went to mobil 1 atf and it fixed it. Mine started to grind into 4th a week ago, so till I get time to reset shifter and try synthetic flued I will slow that shift down with seems to work in the interm. If you come up with some thing good, drop me a pm. Ric
1. Call Chevy customer relations, the number is in your manual, explain the problem ask them to set you up with a different dealer. They should do this.
(I had a trans problem with my company truck-Chevy 1 ton van, trans-problem, they did and the "new" dealer was real attentive, never found problem but hasen't happened since. That dealer gets all my truck work/purchases now)
2. How many times do they fix it before it is a lemon? I would hate to part with my new car but your time is as valuable as theirs.
I don't know WHEN my 03 will get here. I was told it was in transit and to be delivered on or about July 10th, but here it is a week later and no word. So.....assuming it actually was built the week of 6/24....before shutdown (hmmm......arrrrrrgggghh!) it should be here anytime.
OTOH, the buyer for my 2000 hasn't actually crossed my palm the the $31K (we were supposed to do that yesterday) so I guess it's all for the better.
But I do want the 03 because the Hurst and the new V1 and the Framesavers are burning a hole in my workbench!!!
BTW, V1's have gotten a little smaller (thinner vertically) in the past year or so. That's a good thing, as they were almost as big as the original Passport from the 80's....and that was a BIG piece of equipment hanging on your windshield!!

Really--this is a GM car you are talking about--what makes you think they would make the drive line of a stronger just because they increased the HP and TQ. They probably just sat dwon and said someting like:
"Gee we see 0.5% vettes loose the transmission while under warentee; if we increase the power output from 350 TQ to 400 TQ we expect 1.5% customers to loose the tranny under similar circumstances. The cost to repair these failures are a lot lower than to build stronger components. I'm sold--go for it"

Good call! That's what cust. relations is for - to make the customer happy! Especially with the way the economy is now. They should hook you up...
Better yet, call that # from the dealer and have the guy that told you NO explain to them why they won't fix it! :smash:
Keep us posted! I'd like to know if it's a defect or something that just needs adjusting.
My 2002 Red Coupe with 4K on it has it's guts spread out all over the dealer's service bay. Shifter simply locked up in neutral and I coasted to the side of the road. Looking at the disassembled tranny in his shop and the only thing wrong with it is the 3rd Gear synchro has gone away. Dealer said he had a Z06 in last week with the same thing. What problems have they had with the redesigned synchros?
You don't WANT it "fixed". You want and you deserve a NEW transmission.
You're NOT being unreasonable asking for a new tranny.
Help the rest of us that face this problem out by demanding a new transmission.
They've tried to "fix" it to no avail.
Note: There is NO shifter adjustment that will fix this and there was no "mis-adjustment" that caused it.
Your technician KNEW it was the syncros if he's been around trannys much.
That's why he reccomended replacing it.
Remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Squeak until they replace the transmission.
