I have been in touch with the mechanic, the service writer and the shop manager at the dealer. They have had two other Vettes (not Z06's) in recently with broken blocking rings in 2nd gear. They have searched for TSB's on this and tell me there are none. They have treated me very well in the past and I believe them. I think this is a 2002 MN12 Trans issue and there have not been enough problems yet.
I contacted D & D Performance. They are T-56 transmission guys. They mostly do Mustangs, but the T-56 is used in Mustangs, Vettes and Vipers. It's the same basic Trans with somewhat different (more heavy duty) parts as engine power increases. I ordered a steel shift fork for 3rd and 4th at their recommendation. It is from the Viper Trans. As soon as it comes in, I will take my car to the dealer. I suspect syncro's and the shift fork. Of course, there may be other issues, too. We shall see. I will report what I find.
I just picked up my majorly rebuilt 2002 coupe from the dealer. Here's the work order description: "Found transmission stuck between two gears and binding due to broken third gear synchronizer. Replaced third gear, third gear synchronizer, blocker rings and cones for 3rd and 4th gear, 3rd gear shift fork and mainshaft bearing. Was necessary to replace shifter **** due to damage upon removal of retainer." Best I could do after talking to the Dealer and GM Customer Care was an extended 5 yr., 60,000 mile warranty on the re-built transmission. Both Dealer and GM Customer Care said "it is not GM's policy to replace a transmission for a "simple" transmission failure." Sure didn't look simple when my 'Vette was on the lift and everything back of the front tires was on the floor. All covered under warranty but we'll see if it holds together for another 4,000 miles. :U
