Just left the gym and backed out of my parking space fine. Pulled into the driveway and the A4 shifter feels disconnected from the rest of the powertrain. It will go through all the detent's but it does not actually select a gear. Before I delve any further would it be something in the shifter itself for maybe the linkage slipped off? Any idea on how to do a methodical check?
Wait I can just order that bushing? The plastic piece that attaches the cable to the shifter literally what came apart. I assume that meant a new cable. Is there a part number?

If you're putzing around with the cable shown in post # 5, that is not the selector cable for selecting the gears. That is the shift interlock cable and it runs forward and over to the ignition switch, where it then attaches. The part number of that cable is 10313840 and is no longer available new from GM it seems.
If you have damaged yours beyond use, check some salvage yards. There is one being shown on Ebay being sold by corvetterecyclingdotcom for $9.99. Also, Marc at Vettenuts may also have one.
The cable that selects gears is under the car, as posted by BC in post #2.
It is part # 12561688 and available both used and new from a variety of sources. Cheapest I found it (new) was on ebay for $59.75 w/free shipping from a dealer in Dallas.
You lost me.
At the transmission? Or at the shifter.
On the shift cable that attaches to the shifter, there is a plastic piece that the shifter snaps into. It is cracked and damaged beyond repair.

It can be accessed from in the car, the problem is reinstallation requires that you drop the exhaust and tube shield. I was hoping there was a way to remove the old plastic fastner and simply install a new one since it is the only part that failed.

One END of the shift selector cable may be accessible from inside the car, but not both. Again, the gear selector cable is GM part # 12561688. To change it you must go under the car, as one end is attached to the transmission. You cannot change both ends from inside the car. There are no individual replacement parts of the cable assembly available separately.
Btw, the pic I referred to earlier is post #3 (by Smoken1), not #5.

I just fixed mine, exactly the same problem. Go the auto parts store and pick up the Doorman (Help) 14041 bushing kit. There is one in there that will replace the front bushing.
You'll have to take out the console to get to it and remove the shifter. I just did it for the first time and it was super easy.
Search the forum for the removal instructions, then once you're in there, if the shifter just lifts out you'll see the linkage end laying inside the console.
Dig out the remains of the bushing in the linkage end, shove the new one in and snap it back together.

That info will be invaluable to the A4 guys with cable problems on the shifter end.

Headed to the part store now. The Shifter and console are already apart. I will take and post pics as well if I can find the part locally. If not then Amazon Prime gets the nod.

Got mine at O'Reillys in the Help! section, it appears like it is a common issue with linkages in general.
The one you want is the second smallest one in the package.
