Default HID Ballast question

Is it the ballast that controls and dictates the wattage of the bulbs? In other words do you need matching wattage bulbs for a specific wattage ballast used? If I have a 70W ballast can it use the same bulbs as a 35W ballast? I have seen varied and contridicting information regarding this so I am hoping the lighting gurus on the forum can chime in and educate me. Thanks.

I'm no Guru, but my understanding is you can use different wattage ballasts to power HID lights. The temperature or "color" of the light from the bulb will be affected however. So yes, you could use a 70W ballast on a 35W bulb, but the color temp of the light will change. I actually did this for my fog lights using a lower watt ballast with bulbs that came from a higher wattage set. Now if I could just get my headlight HID's to work! I got nothing when trying to connect at the headlight connections, and when that failed I ran a harness from the battery. The Hid's would power on correctly, but when I turned off the headlights, they wouldn't close unless I switched over to stock high beams first =/ Finally put the headlights back to stock for the time being.

The headlights not closing is a common problem especially with the 35 watt ballast. The system senses the low wattage and perceives that as a bulb blown out because it is not sensing the 55+ watts of the stock halogen bulbs. The headlight stays up to alert you to the fact that you have a bulb out, but with the highs on it has enough resistence and closes normally. The fix is either to run higher wattage ballast/bulbs on your low beam HID's or place a resistor in the wiring between the OEM plug and the harness/ballast. Corvette Mods I believe sells one. So get a resistor and get the HID units back in. I am hoping you are running the ACA or similar projectors and not just HID in the stock reflector housing.

Thanks for the info! We were using 55W ballasts, though we were using a bulb from a 35W set. Maybe my next step is to test 55W ballasts with 55W bulbs and see if the headlight goes down then? Next question is why I had to run the harness from the battery? Same issue? Using stock reflector housing at the moment. Just bought her 6 days ago, so I'm still learning EVERYTHING. The purpose of the ACA projectors is better light dispersion?

Sorry if I kinda thread jacked you there.

Do a search on the forum for “ACA headlights”, or “headlight upgrades for a C5” and you will find a wealth of information regarding this. The 55W may or may not fix the issue and a resistor may still be required but it is easy to install. A harness dedicated to the HID lights and direct from the battery ensures the required voltage needed to ignite the HID bulb and then maintain the constant wattage to keep them lit. The problem with use of HID bulbs in the stock reflector housings is that light will be brighter but not focused and scattered. The HID were meant for a projector lens. If you have the factory fog lights, which are projector lenses, the HID bulbs work fine. Check out Radio Flyer Innovations and JW Motoring, two forum vendors offering projector type headlights. Search Google for “C5 ACA headlights” for other sources and information. Here are some starter threads for you. They are dated but will give you a begining:
