Default Steering column problem solved

hi guys and gals

a couple of months ago i posted that a noise was coming from my

steering wheel when i turned right or left. It came and left, but still

i knew thats not right. It sounded like a marble, nut, or washer was

rolling around back and fourth. Today i finally got to work to see what

was going on. I needed to remove just the center portion of the wheel

that is used for horn and airbag, which is only accessed from the back

by two tork 27 bolts recessed 3". Very hard to get to. Even using gm

service manual was little help. Tools I used were either too big, long, to

be able to connect with tork head bolts. I figured out what I needed and

after a trip to Sears was able to find the right tool. It was still a -itch to

unscrew completely. Took hours. Anyway i found a quarter coin in the

assembly that was the rolling sound. BELIEVE THAT???? If you need to

get in there, save yourself time and trouble and get this hex head rachet.

Of course take the air bag fuse out first. I hope this helps someone.

Very Interesting... I wonder if the quarter got in there on the assembly line or by a previous owner.

This story reminds me of the story of a loose ball bearing found in the quarter panel of a new 1960s car----that was discovered only after multiple visits to the dealer service department. And before the loose ball bearing with found-every stop or acceleration resulted in that ball bearing making noise that drove the owner crazy.

Interesting, good job finding the issue , sometimes these little rattles drive me nuts , I have a friend with a coupe ,that has something floating around in the hatch area "like a small nut" every time he goes around a corner you can hear it slide ,

So what are you going to do with your new found wealth? Man some people just seem to fall into it.

Some good information on tools here. I have not seen that ratchet before but can see lots of uses for it. Good for you that you managed to find out what the problem was.
