Sounds interesting, especially if it could be retrofitted to a C5:
2015 Chevy Corvette Gets New Performance-Oriented Automatic Transmission OptionBy: Jeff Youngs, 4/9/2014 Just one year after launching the redesigned Corvette, Chevrolet has announced that the 2015 Corvette Stingray will be available with a new 8-speed automatic transmission specifically engineered for performance driving. The new transmission will replace the 6-speed automatic currently offered as an option for the 2014 models. A 6-speed manual gearbox will continue as standard equipment.
Chevrolet says that the 2015 Corvette Stingray's new 8-speed automatic is based on the same one that is going to be used in the new 2015 Corvette Z06, tuned for use with the Stingray's normally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 engine. The new transmission features paddle shifters and full manual control over gear changes, is 8 lbs. lighter than the 6-speed automatic it replaces, and is predicted by the automaker to reduce internal friction and to improve fuel economy by 5%.
"It was designed to enhance the Stingray's driving experience, with performance on par with dual-clutch designs, but without sacrificing refinement," said Bill Goodrich, an assistant chief engineer for automatic transmissions at General Motors, about the Stingray's new 8-speed automatic.
To underscore this mission, the transmission controller reportedly analyzes driving conditions and adjusts transmission performance up to 160 times per second. Chevrolet claims that the Corvette Stingray's new 8-speed automatic will execute wide-open-throttle upshifts as much as 8/100ths quicker than a PDK automated manual gearbox in a new Porsche 911 Carrera.
Designed and engineered in-house, the Corvette's new 8-speed automatic transmission will be built in Toledo, Ohio.
Thats pretty cool, 8 speed.. wow. Pretty good technology coming. I wouldnt have much use for it as my car is primarily a drag racer now, but if I wanted a auto DD, Id be pretty interested. Ive always been big on the transmission. It is the best way to get good fuel economy.
I still dont understand why they choose the gearing they do though. If they are only going to get 5% better fuel economy with an 8 speed transmission, someone should be slapped upside the head. IMO why even change 1st-5th or 6th? Just simply add the two gears onto the end as super overdive gears to allow the car to travel down the freeway at 80mph at 1500 rpm and get 40+ mpg. Thats how I'd custom my transmission if I had the resources.

I think they choose the lower gear to go after the city mileage numbers. It is a tricky balance trying to achieve awesome performance and also please the CAFE gods.

True, but I'm just saying, that 7th and 8th gear, which will never be used in town, should be ultra high, just for cruising speeds. I'm running around in the 4 speed auto. If I could move to an 8 speed, Id be able to lower 1st through 5th or even 6th, get better low speed economy and acceleration/performance, and then have the 6th and/or 7th and 8th be higher than my transmission ever had to begin with. Win win I say. So why the heck don they do that? Instead they make the final 8th gear similar to whats in the 4 speed, and just add a bunch of gears in-between. Ridiculous.

I have a feeling that the Corvette isn't going to be the only thing the 8-Speed ends up in. It was probably designed that way to make the final gears usable for heavier and/or less aerodynamic vehicles.
The advantage comes in the reduction of RPM drop and shift lag, which allows the car to stay in it's powerband more during acceleration. Likewise, the engine doesn't have to rev as high during normal and stop/go city driving which benefits fuel efficiency and puts less strain on the engine.

But the point is, this can all be achieved with 5 or 6 gears leaving the 7th or even just 8th for a super economical gear.
The 2015 is going to have an automatic? That just seems sacrilegious. It doesn't matter if it makes it faster or more fuel efficient. A manual gearbox is supposed to be in a Z06 (or any corvette really) It just seems like it loses some of the mystique of owning something like that now that any teenager can get in one, pull it into D and go.

Auto it typically better for a dragster. No one can shift as fast as an automatic. The guys with manual gears and more power never beat me. Also, depending on where you live, traffic is a perfectly reasonable explanation for wanting an auto trans. Also the market will be there for buyers wanting an auto, so it's a smart move by the manufacture.

On the bright side, at least GM is still offering a stick unlike many other manufacturers. The performance (and convenience) of automatics is quickly surpassing manuals; unfortunately sacrilege and mystique doesn't affect ETs and lap times.

You are probably both correct, but for us "old guys" there is a bit of nostalgia attached to the act of rowing through those gears. I understand the current crop of auto's are not my father's power-glide but having the car do the work, faster or not, is something like a drone "pilot" vs an onboard fighter pilot, or taking a shower with a rain coat on , or having sex with a cond......nevermind. I admit to the fact that todays autos are more than adequate to be in a Z06, it just doesn't feel right, but works well.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
