Re: How do the C5s fair in crash testing? (C5Noir)
The Insurance Institute for Highway Saftey Vehicle Research Center in Ruckersville Va.(Charletsville Area) never has nor do they ever plan to obtain Crash test results for the C5...............
I did ask Institute President Brian O'Neill about crash testing a C5.......He said "cool idea", but they currently do high sales volume vehicles only.....
SOME OF OUR SAE TOURS ARE COOL. I have witnessed 2 crash tests so far. A Mercedes 320 & this
Nice 40 mph offset crash test.
This is the same place shown on NBC's DATELINE.
Everytime we go they are there shooting film.

If you are asking how badly damaged a vette can get in an accident, I would think a good amount. For instance, at the Corvette Museum, a crash test C5 is on display. While the cabin area looked sufficiently safe afterwards, the rest of the car was toast.

Don't forget to consider the crash avoidance factor. The C5's
amazing handling, braking, accelleration, has saved me from at
least one accident that I know I would not have avoided in my
wife's CLK.

what is the minimum annual volume? they tested an audi a6, bmw x5, infiniti q45, jaguar x-type, land rover discovery series II, mazda millenia and various other cars which I believe have low production volumes.

It probably has more to do with the type of car ... "sports" cars are just not everyday cars ... they would have to compare it to the Mustang, Viper , Ferrari?

I feel that this is an excellent question. Surprised it has not been asked a few times yet. Most of the C5's I have seen pictures of that have crashed..the drivers did not die...one was at 140 mph and flew off an embankment hitting the bank backwards. The front liscense cover is in the "Top Flight Corvette" shop in San Diego..just ask Lawton about the specifics.
It's a good question...I'll be most of us would be afraid to look at test data.
Where's Ralph Nader when you need him?
BTW - Beautiful pic of your beautiful Y2K.
Thanks for the compliment on the ride, Aln. I appreciate it.
I agree that the body panels itself would be absolutely obliterated in any mild accident but I feel that our cage would protect us very well. I know they must crash test these cars to some standard else the government wouldn't allow them to be street legal. This was the case with the Porsche 959. It costs close to $1 million so it was not a wise investment for Porsche to crush a few million dollar rides. However, C5's are nowhere near that price tag. There has to be some good info somewhere :D
Re: How do the C5s fair in crash testing? (C5Noir)
A friend of mine just did this to his by hitting a tree (don't ask) and he figures he was traveling around 40 when he hit this tree head on. The question I ask is how do I help him get out the "Black Box" recorded telemetry that captures 5 secs before the impact and the air bags were deployed?
If in fact it turns out he was going 40.... I think the Vette faired very well.
My friend escaped with just one scratch where he grazed the rear view mirror.
