So I bought a nice converted C6 **** for my C5 but it came with zero instructions. I recall reading you simply twist off the stock and twist on the new in two minutes. However when I attempt to remove the stock **** it seems likes it is twisting the shaft and doesn't want to come loose. Is there more to it? Am I missing something? I don't see a set screw on either the stock or new ****.
It's very hard to get that pin out, I just did that a few weeks ago. You are fighting a little horse shoe shaped pin at the base of the factory shift ****; It's really deep in there. I used an "awl" and a set of needle nose pliers and just inched that sucker out of there. It requires a little picking and digging but it will eventually pop out.
Here is a pic of where the pin resides highlighted in yellow. I hope this helps. I found though afterwards getting a new shift **** to work was actually pretty easy (and looked way better). Best of luck!

I think the op has a 6spd so that pic won't help him... you need to pop off the shift pattern cap on top of the shift **** and use something to pry or pull out the metal pin and then the **** will come right off
