Default Dim Instrument Cluster Electrical Problems

Hello Friends!

Just purchased a 2000 C5 Coupe! My first Vette, and dream car since I was a child!

I've been doing a lot of work fixing it up, and the most recent job I replaced both A/C Blender Door Actuators on the Dual Climate Control HVAC system.

Just reassembled the car this afternoon, and took it for a test drive. When waiting for a stop light, all the sudden the car's electrical went nuts, and the whole car died! Had to shift back into park before I could restart the car.

Now I've also noticed that the "day-time" back-lights of the instrument cluster cannot be adjusted and are VERY dim, and cannot be adjusted. But when I go into a garage and the system switched to "night-time" the gauge lights up perfect, and it can be adjusted now.

When working behind the dash, I tested a few things and noticed something strange. When I pushed the key hard into the ignition slot, sometimes the electrical would briefly reset.
Also the only codes are:
B0-RFA:
U1096 H
U1064 H
U1016 H

Please help!
Thanks!

Carefully go through the diagnosis process for each fuse lister.....
Great, thanks for the info! I will take a look at it today.

Does anyone have a part number for a replacement ignition, and a part number for the matching bezel to go with it?

Just tested all the fuses and they were all good, except for fuse 21 - BTSI BU, that read slightly below the others.

All the fuses read about 12.08v, but fuse 21 came in at 11.94v

I got the ignition out, and was wondering about this rusty red stuff all over the key portion

Also is it normal for the key cylinder to give a little when I push on it?

I've now pulled out the ignition, resurfaced it and cleaned it.
Before:

After:

Put everything back in, and tested it out. Ignition seems okay, but I am still unable to adjust the "day-time" brightness of my instrument cluster.

I did note that when I put my hand over the photo-resistor by the dash instrument buttons the back lighting jumps from super bright to almost nothing, with no in between.

Any more help?

What happened to this after you cleaned the ignition switch?

Just double checked and there is no changes. Fuse 21 is still about 0.1 volt less than the other fuses.

Perhaps I am way over thinking this...

Does the C5 Corvette have back lighted instrument panels during daytime?

Because if the dash is not lighted during the day time, then that answers a silly question and I can reassemble my dashboard!

Thanks again

I misunderstood the problem when I read your first post and was concentrating on the part about pressing the key hard into the key cylinder.
That's a fantastic relief! Wo-Ho! I was very stressed about it being a complicated wiring or computer issue...

Thanks a bunch, I'm going to throw it all back together tonight
And thanks for the tips about the ignition!
