Whistling in engine compartment
I just bought an 02 coupe and am hearing a fairly loud whistling noise coming from the left side of the engine when starting the car. Quiets down after a while. What's up? Do they all do it? Thanks.

I don't know if they all do it, but my 02 Z06 has two whines/whistles; one from the alternator (probably cooling fan blade related), and one from the air intake path. Changes with temp.

My 98 A4 has a whining at startup that sounds like a dentist drill. It goes for about a minute, then every few minutes it sounds for about two seconds. I posted a queston on the forum and was told by several people it was the electric air pump, and not to worry about it. I have only had my car for about four months now, but it hasn't caused any problems.

might be the electric air pump upon startup...if it sounds more like a "cricket" it's probably the idler/tensioner belt.....if it's more like a "whistle" it may be the Intake Manifold :cheers:
