Hypertech Possession (long)
Greetings,
Yep, my car was acting like an extra in the Exorcist movie. I got my Hypertech about a year ago, and decided it was time to give it a try.
I selected the custom install and did the rev limiter increase, the thermostat change, top speed limiter, and the engine power tuning. At about 17% into the programming, it went into service active handling, service traction control, and reduced power on the DIC. I figured it would work it's way out of this. 45 minutes later, Linda Blair is still in control of my car.
I came back in and did a search in the archives, and found where a couple of guys had experienced the same problem. They turned the ign. off, and disconnected then reconnected the PPIII. So, I gave it a shot. It went back up to 17% and started acting demonized again. So at this point, I disconnected it (after turning the ign off) started the car a couple of times, and reconnected it. It now has begun programming again and is up to 30%.
Anybody else have this problem? Can I expect my check engine light to stay on after this is complete?
Sorry for the length of the post.
So, it did this same thing at 37% and 45%, I exorcised it again twice, and finally it finished up it's programming.
What do you think? Should I have left out the engine power tuning?
I had the lights and the chimes go off occasionally. I just went back into the house and left the HPIII alone...when I came back about 30-40 mins later it was done.
It can take a damn long time, sometime near an hour dependent on what settings you choose. The dash lights and warning indicators come on and off. It's a bit unsettling to watch. Make sure your battery is in good condition, especially if you might have to do repeated programmings.
I had something happen to me once. It stalled during programming (no bells or whistles at this point.) I called Hypertech (key still on, never power down the PCM during programming is the golden rule) and they instructed me to disconnect the programmer, reconnect and try again. That worked fine.
My own assessment is that these issues tend to be voltage related. That's the real reason I wish the HPP3 were faster at it's programming. All the alarms that went off for you suggest the same as they indicate the PCM and BCM lost communication at some point. (Not that there should have been much comm at that point...) The SES should clear after a few ignition cycles or you can clear it manually.
In any event, it doesn't have anything to do with what tuning you installed.

Re: Hypertech Possession (jschindler)
Thanks to all that participated.
It finally got thru it OK. For those that chose the power engine tuning, did you notice any spark knock afterwards? 91 Octane gas is the highest I can get around here without going to 100 Octane racing gas.
