cutaway view z06 titanium muffler
Bill Curlee posted this photo in a response to my thread about having a loose object in my muffler (broken piece of cat core). I thought it deserved its own thread. Thanks, Bill!

Its a picture that I saved from another post years ago. Interesting how simple it is.
Thanks for posting.

It's quite surprising that it looks so restrictive. I would have thought that it would be more of a open design (less chambers). Definitely worth investing in an aftermarket performance catback IMHO. I guess weight is the only advantage with the TI's.

You would think that but yet by all accounts on here the Tis are not causing a restriction until well over the 500rwhp range. I know that my 00 is at 450rwhp with the TIs and I asked that specific question. "Would I gain more from an aftermarket?" and the tuner told me that I needed to pick up another hundred hp or so before I would see any restrictions.

The rear chamber has ZERO flow. Its a resonance chamber that cancels out some of the bad harmonics. It does not effect flow.
If you look under the steel wool, there are openings just like you see in the main tube in the first chamber. The next chamber is an immediate route to the two exhaust outlets. So,, its very free flowing.

By the time the exhaust gets all the way back to the muffler it has cooled off enough that it doesn't need giant wide openings to flow enough. Given enough room you could make an exhaust system that would make 1000 h.p. sound like your mom's Ford Taurus.
Loud doesn't mean it flows a lot and quiet doesn't mean that it won't flow enough.

Thats just the way they come from the factory.. As long as the gasses can escape into that middle chamber, they don't care what it looks like,,
You should see what the inside of a stock C5 "H" pipe looks like. The holes in the LEFT & RIGHT bank pipes that allow the gasses to merge into the H pipe are cut with a torch and are about the size of a QUARTER. I **** you not!
It works for what GM wants it to do but not necessarily the best for sound and performance.

It's a long read but well worth the time. This may actually change the way some peopel think about mufflers and exhaust systems.

Similar to Corsa with the noise canceling design.
I really like mine, and I am at 607whp. I guess a could make a few more HP with some bullets, but not worth the resonance or expense, plus they are lighter than most.
I had to pay a lot for Corsa on my C4 to get it to be tolerable noise wise.
Only thing I would like is some nicer tips, that stick out a bit more.

Thanks, we've opened up some ANSAs on our Panteras which are similar to modify the insides. Apparently the Italians take more care of what you can't see than GM.

I allways thought it was silly how it bottle necks down to ~2.25" as it enters the mufflers.. But i can say 1st hand they will make power upwards of 500whp before restricting.. My friend had a SC and a Turbo C5 running Ti mufflers and gained nothing by opening them up.. he swapped the Ti's back in and they car dynoed the same numbers.. 505hp
