Hi guys, I have a 2003 Z06 and I'm hearing what reminds me of an old throw out bearing sound. It only occurs when it's cold or damp. Does anyone have any ideas? It stops when it warms up.it shifts perfect and iv had the inspection cover off everything looked good as far as what you could see. Iv never torn a clutch out of a vette! Any ideas ?
If the car is in neutral and you exercise the clutch does it do it?
The C5 has a known "rattle" in the drive line as you start off in 1st gear. It is not a problem and is a result of the torque tube and drive line design. It is even discussed by the Chief Engineer in the owners manual video which also tries to capture the sound. It is louder inside than outside.
This may not be what you are experiencing but I thought I would throw it out there. Here is the video.
Hi dadaroo, no it does not do it with the clutch pushed in. I'm familiar with the normal rattling, this is more like the bearing is squeaking. Maybe it needs grease! Lol but this is great vidio! Thank you..
Hi onlyavette, yea it only does it when it's cold or damp. And that's with the clutch fully out! It doesn't do it in neutral or with the clutch in ??? I don't know. Maybe I need to pack grease around the bearing?
If it is noisy when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor and the transmission is in gear, (any gear) that could be a bad pilot bearing. If the pilot bearing is bad it will be quieter when the trans is in neutral and the clutch pedal is up.
Is it easy to get it to go into gear?
If it is clunky when you go from neutral, clutch out to first, clutch in, that would also indicate a bad pilot bearing. Without being there to hear what the noise is and the exact conditions when it is making the noise, it is very difficult to say exactly what it is. Keep looking and listening and you or someone will get it.
Hey onlyavette, yea it goes into gear perfecly. The only time you hear it like I said is when its cold or damp. And you have to let the clutch out and be going about 10 MPH, then you hear the squeak. This car runs and shifts perfectly, I could speed shift it making that noise! I dont though until it warms up. So maybe theres a grease fitting. Well thats what I read somwhere? And some artical said that you could rub grease around the bearing. But I thought they were ceiled? But thank you so much for your in put... Ill figure it out when it quits on the side of the road.Hahahahaha
If you do pull the drive line when all is said and done I would consider making sure everything in the clutch is inspected or replaced. Also consider putting in a remote clutch slave bleeder. New pilot bearing also.
Keep us posted. Mr. Sam
PS: If it were me and I went into the torque tube I would replace the couplers too unless you have a REALLY good reason not to.
Okay dadaroo. I'm getting ready to drive to Tennessee from Detroit, we will see how that goes. Then when I get back ill face the music. Thanks for the advice! I think you've pin pointed it.
