A friend has Corsa Indy's with the Corsa X-pipe and I notice when decelerating (MN6 tranny) sometimes it backfires pretty loud. I am not talking about the popping sometimes heard with other systems, but a real loud out-of-the-exhaust backfire. He has cam, heads, and some other mods. Is this normal for that exhaust system?
The Indy's backfire like crazy - I've had them in for a couple of weeks and am enjoying it immensely. This is perfectly normal. However, the x-pipe is supposed to reduce the backfiring. Maybe your friend's other mods contribute to the situation.
I don't know...I get the same thing but mostly when the car hasn't really warmed up. I kinda liked the sound myself. But you said that you hear a single type POP....hmmm...may have heard that once but not to often. I guess I am going to need to get mine checked.
the "motorboat" gurgle and "popping" on engine decelleration is normal, and sounds sexy...but what he's describing is not--that's potentially damaging to the car...:)
NO
Backfiring like that is absolutely NOT normal---you need to get looked at...
DOH! Sorry. wrong answer...While it may not be desireable, every Indy setup I have heard, including mine, has some minimal backfiring. If you are talking about a really large cannon fire, THAT I would say is not normal.
I don't understand how an exhaust system can cause backfire... It has to do with raw gas getting in the pipes and then exploding...
I have TPIS headers. Is it possible that they are scavenging enough raw gas out of the cylinder to make an explosion?
I remember the olds days...Had a buddy who dorve an old pickup truck... He would turn the key off while he was in gear and still moving (motor off but still spinning and sucking gas through the carbs). Leave it off for a few seconds and then he would turn the key back on..
Holy crap it sounded like an M80! Used to wake the neighborhood with that little trick. :D

Double DUH
Hey bro, I thnk he meant the KA BANG type backfire when HE said THAT is NOT normal
OK, let me try to explain a sound by using words (not easy). The backfire is louder than a regular firecracker but less than a cherry bomb. Not sure how else to describe it.
And, yes, he does have the long tube headers. Another friend has almost the same setup but a different X-pipe and his does not backfire at all, just has popping. The sound I am trying to describe reminds me of a sprintcar coasting down the front stretch, just not backfiring as many times.
Hmmmm.... have you gotten down and tried to see if it may be coming from a point ahead of ther mufflers? Maybe a poor pipe-fitting or something? Or is it coming out of the tailpipes themselves?
Vettepartz is referring to my car and thank you John for the post and concern. Since I drive this car daily I can fill in the blanks.
- The backfire normally is no louder then a firecracker
- It occurs mostly while car is warming up
- It happens two/three times within 1 1/2 hrs city driving
- Only during decelerating from 3K or more
- Exhaust has been flanged at headers, everything checked/no leaks
Side note: The car runs like a raped ape, I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong with the motor or exhaust.
We just reflashed the pcm this past weekend maybe we'll see.
By the way John, drove in city about a 1/2 hr today no loud pops...FYI
I am running TTS long tube headers with the Corsa X-pipe and Indy's. I will occasionally get a "louder" pop when decelerating/downshifting or when the temperature is cooler. The condition seems to be normal as long as the occurence is not occuring regularly.
Have you checked all of the welds on the exhaust system? I have the Corsa Indys and mine used to "backfire" until I had the muffler shop fix the broken weld at the point where they bolt to the factory exhaust. The "backfire" noise has all but gone away! I believe that you probably have a exhaust leak somewhere in your system. Hope that helps :) .
