Default Replacing Rear Shocks Question..??

I need new Rear shocks. Recently acquired Used '99 a/t coupe w/222500K. Rear end felt a little squishy, now I know why..I'm having the Trans replaced..These shocks I see look like they could be the originals ???

Question, I can't replace them now.. but when I do, will I need a 'vette specialty shop or can your standard type muffler/shock shop replace them without problems..??

Thanks for your input.

BTW if somebody has a good used pair of Rears (Really Lo-Priced) maybe I can scrape up the coin..

(ps: I ain't cheap, just a financially challenged Vegas Sax Player)

I picked up a set of low mileage C6Z06 shocks (actually they were off a 2013 GS) off another member in the C6 Parts for Sale. All 4 were a $100 bill shipped to me. Did the install myself in the driveway.

Shocks are something anyone with even the most basic skills with tools can do. A jack, a jack stand, a bunch of zip ties to hold the shocks compressed while you uninstall the old and install the new ones and that's it. Lots of DIY threads with pics have been written here about it. Don't let some clown charge you hundreds to do what you can do in an hour or so. You should also consider doing all four shocks at the same time. Same process, front or rear. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that having the trans replaced is taxing your budget. HOWEVER, since they're just hanging there, as you can see in your picture, NOW would be the ideal time to replace the rear shocks, since most of the obstacles are out of the way.....

I followed this writeup and it worked great for me. http://fuzzydiceracing.com/test.htm

Some of the others required removing tie rod ends, A-arms, etc., this one doesn't. And yes, zip ties are your friend. Good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, but I'm afraid I'm not at all mechanically inclined. Plus my hands are are my Sax tools and I don't generally use the them to twist wrenches. I have learned from ya'll the job isn't gonna be too bad. I got a couple of great shadetree mech pals. Hoping a 20 pack will at least get the rears done. I still gotta score a set, I'm thinking used Lo mile ZO6 is the way to go when I'm ready. Wish I could do it now but my banker won't let me.

That is the write up I used. I replaced mine on my Z06 over the winter with C6 Z06 shocks. It went very easy using that write up. The fronts required the most attention because of the nut threading on the shaft and having a little window to operate the wrenches.

Especially if they could get at the car right now, with the rear disassembled, if they won't go at it for a 20-pack, then they just aren't friends.....

Default Help me understand

I have a major problem with the shocks on my 04. All 4 are leaking at the same time. The car has the selective Mag ride option. Even the vette tech at the dealer has said that in his 25 years as a vette tech he has NEVER seen 4 shocks leak at the same time. History- the car is only run for 5+ months a year. It goes to sleep mid Nov & comes out Mid May. There are 54000 miles on the car & it is in Fantastic condition. I need help trying to understand why this is happening?
Thanks

It's likely Obama's fault.

I have an '01, with 23,000 miles on it. It's driven only in the summer, and so far, I'm OK. However, in retrospect, I'm sorry I ordered the F45 option. Had I known better, I would have ordered the Z51 option instead.

One thing, however, did the dealer remove the "stuffers" from your shocks, when the car was first delivered?

This thread is someone else's. Try starting your own thread, and that way things won't get so confusing, and I'm sure there will be some help for your question(s).

Age.. thing go bad.. magnetic ride are VERY expensive to replace. Most guys replace them with the C6Z06 shocks and have the magnetic ride option disabled in the BCM with a GM Tech II. there is a couple posts about it and where the tech can locate the on/off feature with the tech II.. Bill Curlee is the man for that info if you search his posts he give detailed instructions. Mag ride is cool when its good and junk when its bad.... $$$$$1000 each shock to replace IIRC.

As for the OP... just order new GM C6Z06 shocks from the venders here both rears are like $100 for the pair. like 200-250 for a full set of 4

If you haven't already, you might try posting up in the "C5 Parts" section with a "Wanted To Buy" thread. Never know, you might get lucky and find someone selling just what you're looking for.

Btw, yes a regular shop can handle the labor on this, it's not terribly hard at all. No special "tricks" involved.

Oh well..Karma I guess, I hijacked a few threads myself over the years..Back to the issue, I see those fresh ZO6's at $100 a pair..sounds like the way to go..I don't really want to put used stock shocks back on my car.

I just put DRM shocks in my car and I have my original 03Z shocks sitting here with only 20k miles. They are yours for 100 shipped. Just let me know if you want them. I threw away the top rubbers though
