I own an '01 Z06 with approx. 36,000 miles. I absolutely love the car, but it's developed a pretty unbearable whine that begins in 3rd gear under load and continues to increase as speed increases. I've done some research and the whine in this video is nearly identical to my problem:
I have no noise in 1st and 2nd, but as soon as 3rd is under load the whine is present, and seems to vary with the throttle input:
Clutch In/Coasting/Deceleration=No noise
Light throttle=Loud
Medium throttle=Decreased, but still very noticeable.
Full throttle=Long tube headers take over
Does this sound like a bad differential to you guys?
Hey guys, back from a business trip. Last night I jacked the car up and listened for the whine, and traced it to the differential. Drained the differential fluid and noticed bits and pieces in the oil.
Needless to say, it's pretty shot. I'll blame it on bad heat cycling from the previous owner...
dadaroo, yes it does continue through 6th. It starts in 3rd and sings it's merry song with every gear change. I was planning on new gears anyways, so a new differential from RPM is on the way!
I really want to install a stiffer rear gear. I prefer better acceleration than high speed. Having to move through the gears quicker in normal driving does not bother me. Running at higher RPMs doesn't either. I'll be dead and gone long before I wear the motor out.

Make sure if you go with 3:90 or 4:10 gears that you have someone that knows how to build these differentials..I purchased a 3:90 differential from what I thought was a reputable shop in south cal. and 2000 miles later the whining started so finally after 3 years of a whining diff I went and put the 3:42 diff back in and its very quite.
