hey guys my 99 c5 manual is have some trouble staying in gear. when you put it into first it can be a little hard to slip in and when i go to take off it will jump out . i have adjusted the shifter and it still does it. is my transmission going out or do i just need to replace the shifter ??
First and foremost, the shifter MUST be ridgely mounted and can not FLEX or move when you select gears. Frequently, the rubber shifter box bushings rot and get soft and the box moves around when you apply force to select a gear.
The ZO6 box has solid metal bushings!
Next, I have see the four bolts that secure the stick to the box get loose or are replaced by bolts that are too long and the stick isnt secured to the box properly.
Next! The shift ball inside the box has a plastic shoe that can break or wear and that allows slop in the shift linkage.
Next! The shift rod in the box is supported by bushings at either end. If those bushings are worn, it will never se;lect gears properly.

Have you ever changed the ATF fluid in your MN6 Transmission? If not, I recommend that you also give that a try.
I had the same identical problem with my 99 6mm coupe. The fix was that I went to R.P.M. in Anderson IN. They are 6MM experts. They did what they called a " refresh " . The tranny from that day on has been like a NEW tranny. The tranny was never as smooth and ease in shifting from the day the car was brand new. Problem solved and still going strong after the fix at 123,000 miles. Car now has 151,000 miles. Additionally, the tranny would ease out of 6th gear by itself. This problem was also solved at the same fix.
Good Luck !

Had this problem developed over time did it start as a grind or hard to get into first if so it may be an issue with the clutch releasing properly and causing damage to the transmission? Typically once an issue arises the damage has been done inside the transmission and will have to be taken out to be fixed.
The being hard to put into gear is an indication of a clutch issue have you tried to put the transmission into any other gear while sitting still do you still have the same feeling and how does the transmission shift when the engine is off.
If it shifts smooth and well with the engine off its an issue with the clutch but fixing the clutch will not keep it from jumping out of gear
i replaced the clutch but i had this issue before i replaced it. most times you have to pull it into second gear before it will go into first, and if you dont feel that second little notch into first as soon as you release the clutch it grinds very bad. makes you look like you cant drive a stick shift lol. the car has over 2xxx on it and i dont think the transmission has had any work done to it. can i put a six speed out of a zo6 in my 99 c5?
