Hi,
I'm new here and looking to pick up a base C5 before the end of the month here. I was talking to some buddies at a show and they were saying that the C5 motors had some revisions made to them somewhere around 99 they Think...
I wanted to see if anyone knew what they were and if it was worth spending a little more and getting a newer model like a '00 up vs. say a 97-98, if they.
I would like this to be a daily driver and will probably never track the car bout would like to take it on some road trips.
Thanks!
In 2002 they had the upgraded pistons and napier rings. Not sure if all or most had the LS6 block. Later tire monitors, etc. Personally, I would look at 02 and up unless you get a real good deal on an earlier car.
Thanks! Good to know! I'm looking at two this weekend one is a '00 with 69k for $16,000 and the other is an '03 with 79k for $17,000. I'm hoping I can talk them down some I only wanted to spend $15,000
All years are great cars really. Plenty of early year C5s well over 200k miles in this forum. There are some discontinued parts for the pre 01s I believe, and there was a year somewhere in the middle where the rings needed to be replaced in the engine because of abnormal oil consumption, but other than that as stated there are tons of hi mile C5s of all years throughout the forum.
I'll vote for '02 or higher also, there were a lot of little, but important changes IMHO with the '02. Good luck with the search, let us know what you get!
I believe all the updates and changes were made starting with the 2001 model. Look for a 2001-2004.
No, the 2001 didn't get the new rings. They were introduced in the 2nd week of production in 2002. The pistons were introduced on March 2001 near the end of production. That is why I recommended 2002 and newer.
I went with the 2003 that has 79k on it, its the 50th Anniversary Edition. Gonna be broke for a while haha but very happy with it! Huge upgrade from the Mini Cooper S i had before even with over $10k into it! I wish i had money to start playing with it since it's 100% stock.
Just so you'll know, the 50th Anniversary Edition only came in Anniversary Red with Shale interior. While you have a beautiful car and a great color, it is a 50th anniversary year car, but not the 50th Anniversary EDITION. The difference mostly being that the edition model option was $5000 extra.
You won't be sorry that you went with a newer model.

I read about this year AND the one color combination and options that year that made it the 50th Anniversary Edition. Seems like there were many people misrepresenting the year of the 50th and that all cars that year were the 50th Anniversary Edition.
Hopefully you weren't fooled by the seller into thinking that
good to know! all of the emblems say anniversary so i just figured it was lol do all the '03s have special emblems? or do you think the previous owner added them all over the car?
no they didnt use it as a selling point i just thought it was neat haha i feel i got a decent deal on it compared to kbb or nada i feel it wasnt bad, and i got out of my mini cooper that i swear was cursed and a lot slower lol
The one on the steering wheel is added, it's just stick on aftermarket, but the nose and trunk emblems are the same for the Edition and the other 2003's. The Anniversary Edition also has two emblems, one on each front fender that the other 03's did not.
This picture shows the emblem, but the wheels on the Edition were a champagne colored thin spoke (not the ones in this picture)

Thanks guys! im loving it! super fun daily driver until it snows lol it really needs an exhaust but wow are they expensive! I paid like $400 for the one on my last car these are $900!
