I was talking with my performance guy on the phone today talking about doing some upgrades. We were talking about intakes, and he asked which one I have. He said well the LS1 came with two different ones based the year of the car. Later ones had the same intake as the LS3. Anyone else ever heard of this?
97-2000 C5's all had one engine choice: the LS1. This model LS1 made during these years had a very restrictive intake manifold. The 2001-2004 C5's had two engine choices: the LS1 and the LS6. The LS1 was for base cars, while the LS6 was the performance variant that came in the Z06. Although these engines had different heads and cams (thus the difference in power ratings), they both had the same revised intake manifold, dubbed the "LS6 intake". The LS6 intake came on every LS1/LS6 car made beginning in 2001 until the end of the production run when the LS2 came out in the 05' year. The LS6 intake produces an extra 10-15 rear wheel horsepower over the 97-00 LS1 intake. LS6 intakes can be found on 01+ LS1 Camaros/Trans Ams; GTOs, and Corvettes. The going rate for them (used) is around $350 or so. If you have a 97-00 Vette, go get one and put it on, it isn't that difficult.
As for the "LS3 intake" fitting LS1 cars, that is not true as the LS1 and LS2 engines have "cathedral intake ports" and the LS3 was revised as a rectangular port.
Your guy is correct (can't say in regard to the LS3 issue). I've heard two versions - don't know which is more accurate.
Version 1: Beginning with the 2001 model year cars, LS1 engines came with LS6 intake manifolds.
Version 2: Getting an LS6 manifold on a 2001 LS1 engine was hit-or-miss, but thereafter '02s through '04s definitely got them.
My 2001 LS1 was built in late November of 2000, and it has the LS6 manifold.
