Most likely the thrust bearing is missing that goes behind the cam sprocket.

OK, sorry, but I am confused again. The front of the cam has an undercut that is the thickness of the cam plate. Once the cam plate and sprocket are installed, the cam can't move fore/aft. Does it move with the cam plate and sprocket or are you talking about when the cam plate is installed and not the sprocket. The latter case is normal.

With the gear on, the spec for fore/aft movement is .001-.012".
That cam it too far forward in the picture. So either something wrong with the cam or the cam plate has an issue.

As far as throwing rocks at the **** poor design, seems to me that only about a million cars with stock parts work just fine.....

the pic shows the cam to far to the rear and for some unknown to me reason with the cam retainer plate installed and the timing gear installed and the timing chain installed i can move the cam to where it is in the picture and move it to the correct spot also!@#$% that to me looks like half the width of the cam lobe approx 1/4"

Wasn't sure which end of the engine was shown in your photo.

Too far back, either you are missing a thrust bearing, or the gear isn't bolting all the way on.

What would have become of the thrust bearing? Wasn't in the box?

Got a pic of the cam side of the gear?

Sure, if you know who made the timing set. It's likely a Torrington bearing.
Or just get a new timing set.
You will get it figured out. At least nothing got damaged.
