Noticed that when I leave work at nite my dash lits (tech, speedo, and fuel,, etc go off when I start-up. Radio and ac/heat, and HUD are on.. They work fine during day operation, and work when I turn on the Park lites, and then head lights..Would a bad Inst. panel cluster relay or Inst. panel dimmer cluster be bad, or a good place to start problem solving???
Thanks for any help and directions...mike venth flag::

Mike

Some lights are turned on by the BCM and some lights are turned on by relays controlled by the ignition switch HOT IN RUN buss.

When you turn the ignition switch to CRANK/START, the contacts for the some loads are intentionally turned off.

When I get home tonight, I will see what my 02 Z does at dark when I crank it.

You may just have dusty contacts in the dimmer switch. Rotate it up and down quickly a few times and see if you still have the issue. The movement will wipe the rheostat as the wiper moves.

Only if you can get it down inside the switch part itself. I don't know if there are any openings in the housing or not.

Bill, 65GGvert, tried spinning the dimmer back and forth. no difference.
Also noticed last nite that the (MPH) dial on the speedo was going dim, then back to bright,,, then very dim.. It was at dusk??? Ounce I turned on the parking/run lites everything was fine..Also-seams that the dimmer switch does nothing for the gauges/dash lites, brighter/dimmer.
thanks for all your help guy's

OK....................Heres the scoop. When you enter the car, the IPC lighting that you see is FLORCESENT BLACK LIGHT supplied by TWO 4" florescent tubes. If,,, You get down on you hands and knees and look in the very outside corner of the ICP behind the glass, you can see the black light florescent tube. Its about 4" long. Theres also one on the other side of the IPC.

The black light illuminates the florescent paint on the gage faces and gage needles. The DIMMER has nothing to do with that lighting intensity.

Once you turn on the Park Lights or Head lights, you turn OFF the black light Tubes and turn on the incandescent bulbs in the IPC that are used for back lighting. YES,, They are dimmer controlled.

SO,,, if your black light tubes are faltering, the DC to AC converter board may be suffering from damaged transistors OR,, the voltage to the IPC may be insufficient. That is or can be caused by dirty or damaged ignition switch contacts.

I cant remember if you cleaned your ignition switch or not. Measure the voltage on the IPC Fuse test points to ground and make sure that you have FULL battery voltage on that fuse with the ignition ON.

Let me know what the voltage reading is on that fuse.

Give me a call Mike.
