Default Extended warranty...

Is an extended warranty worth it? The dealer quoted me several thousands of dollars for only two (maybe three, I can't remember) years additional protection.

What are the most expensive parts that are commonly or may need to be replaced?

They seem to be highly recommended by the guys. I have one for my 98 although I have never had to use it. Do a search and you will come up with a lot of responses to this.

IMHO... yes! What you may consider minor problems can turn into hundreds of dollars in expense.

Call Ken Fichtner (406) 628-4618.
Sells them for bit over cost.
Yes, it is worth it considering all the computers on board.
You can trf on sale OR get refund on unused balance.

I didn't buy the GM Extended warranty, but instead got one through 1SourceAutoWarranty.com. Check them out, they have much better prices and terms. :yesnod:

I got mine with 1source as well. Had to use it twice now. I got my money back from what I purchase the warranty for. They work great, just find a reasonable dealership that will work with them.

Wouldn't not even consider it untill you reach the 364th day of the 2nd year or 35,999 miles. Then buy one.

Paid Ken $870 to add the GM protection plan to my 97 in May of 2000. So far I have had the right side mirror replaced at $274.00, the right front wheel bearing replaced at $700+ and some welding on the exhaust for about $100. If you track the car the wheel bearings alone are enough to consider a protection plan since the fronts list at $638 each.

I bought my 97 used.

It quickly developed to fuel gage gremlin, directional signals/4-way flashers went intermittent, the read out for the climate control flamed out, and the remote CD stacker that failed just to cover the highlights. All this at 35,000 miles and 4 months out of warranty. The bill was a bit over $3000!

I still love the car but wish I had had the extended warranty.

For what it's worth.

I got 6 years/60k miles for $1700 from the dealer. Just had battery problems. Battery, computer, 3 sensors, twice on a flatbed and 2 rental cars was told this would have been $4k. I did the math and I'm glad I got it.

Only $1700, the dealer I went to wanted around 4K. Is it true that you can only add one extended warrantly? So, in other words, can you extend an extended warranty? Thanks.

nope, you can only do it once. remember you can transfer the warranty when you sell it or cash out the balance. i didn't realize that when i bought mine or i would have bought the longest with the most miles i could afford. i have had mine for less than 2 months after my original warranty expired and have collected $300 more in claims than i spent on the warranty. still got 3 years left! call ken fitchner for the gm warranty and its good at ANY gm dealer not just chevrolet. a lot of dealers will not work with the aftermaket private warranty companies and if you are out of town and have a problem, this could be a major disaster! :D

Yes, it's worth it. Also, most dealers will sell one for $200 or so over their cost.

I just bought an extended warranty for my 1998 4wd Expedition (29,000 miles) bumper to bumper for a great price :D

The lack of hidden loopholes and delivery where others tend to fail or get shady on when asked directly drove me to these guys (talked Ford and Dodge trucks on a personal level for about 20 minutes). They also have something called "an enthusiast discount" for vehicles where word of mouth sells :chevy

I've learned so much about extended warranties-which can seem more like insurance companies than original factory warranties. Research it, and don't necessarily go by price...$300 extra over a 7 year 100K warranty looks great until the !@#$ doesn't pay or won't cover you....:mad

If you want to hear more, email me directly. :seeya

I guess I don't understand how the warranty works.
Why would that make a difference?

Be careful on that statement. Most of the aftermarket warranties will require you to still be under factory warranty in order for you to qualify for an extended. Even then, I had a 1K mile and one month waiting period before my warranty kicked in. This is to prevent you from not getting one, then your car breaks and you purchase one costing the company money. In my case I went with warranty gold, they seem to be great with how they pay for repairs and who you can take your car to. $4k is a huge ripoff. I got 6yr/60K extended (from the time I purchased the warranty not from the time the car was originally purchased like some of them) for less than $1200. I haven't had to use them yet luckily, but they cover just about everything with their platinum program. When you figure just about any repair you have to do to this car is going to cost you probably more than that, it is very good peace of mind. Get one through someone. JMO.

One big difference will be the price- you'll pay more if you wait longer.

As far as I know the GM extended warranty is the same price for the entire period of your original warranty???? It's just that you can't get the extended warranty if you let the original expire??????
