Actually the LS1 began using the LS6 shortblock in late 01 production (minus the LS6 cam of course).
This has also been confirmed by c4c5specialist who has disassembled the engines for warranty work and such and seen the bay to bay breathing etc on the late model 01 LS1's. Im not sure of the exact switchover date tho.
The primary difference before late 01, was the LS6 used the different block.

Well, the block wasn't responsible for the power increases.
The main thing to increase power is the LS6 heads (visually distinguished by 'D' shaped exhaust ports), and the cam with more lift and duration.
thanks for the clarification Miles. I was simply referring to the shortblock. Your right tho. The LS6 in essence is just a mild head and cam jobbed, LS1.
So if you already have the LS6 block on a late 2001, then what would it be better to go with: stage II LS1 heads or stage I LS6 heads? Assuming a .221/.558/114 cam and longtubes?

For the money, and if on a stock displacement motor, you can get more out of LS1 heads. Mostly because the bare ls6 casting are a grand.
I'm gonna have a go at describing the external difference between the LS1 and the LS6. Look at the extension of the block deck on the right (passenger) side just forward of the head (where older small block motors had the serial number stamped). You will see a rough indentation toward the center of the block and a flat machined section toward the side of the car. On the LS1 the machined section is flat and on the LS6 the machined section has a slight machined cutout. It's hard to explain, but if you look at this part of the block on an older (early '01 and prior) LS1 and a Z06 side by side, you can easily see the difference.
Duck,
Thanks for the info. Looks like mine would also be an LS6 block. So all I need now is the heads, cam, exhaust, clutch, MAF, MN12, brakes, wheels, windshield, etc and I'll have a ZO6.

Yup, you've got the LS-6 block. Not sure when they switched over, but you should see the difference if you look at a 2000 model.
This is interesting. So, it appears that most of the 2001 LS1's had LS6 blocks...but did they still have the LS1 breather setup or the new and improved LS6 version?
