I have a 03 Z with 55k on it. Lately it has developed kind of a notchy shifting issue. It feels a little clunky going in and out of gears.
I just changed the trans fluid to see if it would help but it didn't seem too.
Do you guys have any tips to get this thing to shift smoother? Is there a trick I don't know about. Is there anything I should do with the linkage? Are there lube points I don't know about?
I would start with a shifter alignment. Easy to do and usually fixes what you're describing. Do a search on this forum. There are loads of posts on how to do it. You will need to remove your center console and radio bezel to get to the shifter box though.
Usually, a trans fluid change makes a positive difference in shift quality.
1. What did your old MN12 ATF look like when it was drained?
2. What ATF did you reinstall??
3. Have you ever changed your CLUTCH master cylinder brake fluid? If not, suck that old brake fluid out and keep replacing it till it stays clean.. It may take MANY change outs.
If it were me, and the shift issue continues after checking the shift box alignment and changing the clutch master cyl brake fluid, I would install a new C6 Shifter and lower box.
MUCH better shift feel from a stock shifter!
Another issue that can make shifting more difficult is insufficient clutch disengagement. Start the engine, trans in first, car on flat level road, trans in first gear. If you press the clutch fully to the floor and REV the engine to about 5000 RPM, do you feel the car creep forward??
The old fluid looked really good. I put redline D4 fluid back in.
I did the shifter alignment job today.
I guess i should have been more clear. All the gears shift smooth except 3rd to 4th. After everything it is still notchy and grinds going from 3-4 I think I have a bad synchro.

Could very well be internal damage. Drive it for a bit and see if the new fluid and better shifting smooths things out.
IF,,,,,,,,,,,, you happen to need MN12 or MN6 internal repairs and need a VERY good Tramsmission Shop,, here's my recommendation for a shop that will provide you the VERY BEST in custom trans repair/up-grade / service:
