Mr. C's 5--could you explain that a little bit more. What doughnut? You mean the rubber cover/boot, held down with 4 screws, or do you mean you actually took something out of the shifter itself and put it in your Hurst? Reversing the inner bellows of the boot is a well known thing, and it's mentioned in the Hurst and Kirban instructions.
However, if you've stumbled upon something that actually quiets a noisy shifter, please explain that some more.
Good statement Tracy, what concerns me is that, and I have to go back a few years, is that a friend of mine got warped into following suggestions with his suspension and wound up bouncing into oncomming traffic with a screwed up suggestion on shocks. Now try and follow him through security at an airport, I think he's two thirds metal now. So I'm a little sensitive when it comes to altering a very dynamic car that can get you in an awful lot of trouble in a hurry. Always get concerned when someone has a problem with the handling of this car and has some better idea.
jimman--Funny you should mention it.....I've just developed a reprogam mod for the Active Handling system...it allows you to drive just like they did on Fast & Furious. Send me $189.99 and I'll have it to you in 6 months. :D  :jester :D  :jester :D  :jester
The GOOD thing about this forum is you get some real-life feedback from guys like us regarding the mods that the vendors throw at us. How many guys relocated the temp sensor in their air inlet system (they jumped on a bandwagon that wasn't going anywhere!!), but eventually we all learned that mod and the T-body bypass and a few other mods were useless. We also learned about Andy's Framesavers here, and those are a wonderful, useful mod. So....like anything else, it's "Let the Modder Beware" or something like that.
Clearly, we all have that choice of jumping on a questionable bandwagon or sitting back and waiting for the true-life roadtest results to come in.
Now excuse me while I go install my expensive Wet Okle seatcovers (and hide the nice leather) on a car that *might* see 4000 miles in a year. I really want to preserve that nearly indestructible leather for the next owner, while I sit on rubber for a few years. Yeah, right..... Don't people put seatcovers on old cars with ratty upholstery to cover it up???? Plenty of people will flame me for saying it, but I think these seatcovers are the single most silly, useless mod you can do. Yeah, they look okay (but not better than leather) and are well made, but WHY are people thinking they NEED them. What are they protecting, and for whom? It's just like those slipcovers in your parents house, on the "good" furniture that no one was allowed to sit it. What were they *saving* it for? Just my opinion, and I don't really care how any of you spend your money on rice junk like that. Oooops, sorry....just my opinion and nobody's gonna change it. Just like some guys will think the stock shifter is fine, and I think it needs to be changed when you bring your 2003 home from the dealer....and that's exactly what I did. And the Framesavers, too!! :yesnod:
You too????? I'd rather have a few stone chips than an ugly bra (that can eventually scuffs the paint)!! And the rubber nose of our cars is amazingly resiliant to chips. I had two or three tiny, invisible chips after 22000 fast miles in my 2000. Looked like new, basically.
Seat covers and bras. Why not just cover the whole car (like that Enterprise rental car commercial), or drive it around on a trailer to show everybody your "precious baby"!! :U
No rattle with the Kirban, but a little rattle with the Hurst. I'll still take the Hurst over the Kirban and the stock unit.
Tracy, I've got $189.99 burning a hole in my pocket and I've just got to have that mod. What's it do, anyway?
What I really want to know is, have you gotten over your buyer's remorse?
If not, just wait till you hit 500 miles on the odometer. You'll never look back.
My Hurst is quiet even with the stock ****.I have changed the springs a couple of times with different combinations. It takes me less than 5 minutes to change them.I just changed again to the light outer springs....one per side and it feels very nice......for some of you guys and gals that find it hard to get into reverse this is your ticket.
You just gotta get my Active Handling Enhancer Bypass Relocator mod. It improves airflow to the PCM, thus allowing the silicon chips to work faster, much like cryonic "zero resistance" wire, currently under research at leading universities across the country. It "free's up" your slow, ambient temperature dataports, allowing the AH system to fully support "your style of driving that you demand from your new Corvette".
Please send the $189.99. Cash is fine.
As for buyer's remorse.....I saw my beloved 2000 on Sunday, on the street. It just *looks better* than the Z....more elegant and classy. Silver just ain't as classy. But then, I don't have 500 miles yet...... :D :D :D
tracy,
The stock shifter has a rubber ring around the shaft. The only way to remove it is separate the shaft from the plate. This will, unfortunately, destroy the stock shifter but since I'll never go back, that was ok with me. I then slipped it over the Hurst shaft (you're right, I'm not sure it needs to be inverted) after it was bolted in. It just looked like a good idea to me because it covers up the space over the pivot point. After hearing of some people's troubles, I'm glad I did it. It’s worked fine but I've not had it past 70 yet. I'll know more about how it works after I get back from the Sand Hills Open Road Race where I expect to be over 150. - C.
Mine doesn't rattle at all, dead silent. I'm using an aftermarket shift ****, too.
But then, I hate the thing. I haven't taken it back out of the car yet, because I'm still trying to give it a chance. I found the stock shifter lets me shift faster and I miss gears less. Yes, I do believe it's impossible to miss 2nd-3rd with the Hurst, but I never missed it with the stock one, either. But with the hurst, I screw up 4th to 5th (and not shifting fast) all the time. Makes normal driving a real bitch.
======================================== ============
Just my .02
If you are granny shifting into 5th and missing a gear something else might be wrong with the shifter. Have you tried driving someone else's vette that has a Hurst shifter installed?
I came can power shift mine from 1st to 4th and never lift off the throttle, and it doesn't miss shifts or make any noise. I have never tried banging 5th at a 140 mph coming out of 4th  I guess I'm a sissy
 :jester
Holy Smokes!! Has anybody else every tried this mod? What if it acually works to calm the rattle?
Please let us know how it goes when you push the car!!
I'm gonna have a look at my stocker this evening and see exactly what Mr. C's 5 is talking about here. This could be big news!! Let's hope so.
I adjusted my stops so they don't touch but it still seems as though the pivots tollerances are wrong. Why will some rattle and others not. Again Hurst told me it's normal for the rattle of which I'm having a problem with. Maybe if I put 20" wheels all around that would help.
C5/Z06s do not need the stops. if you use them, just make sure the shaft does not touch the the stops when in gear. make sure they are tight too, as it seems the shifter ships with them loose. on our installs, we remove them completely and silicone the holes.
for the rattle/s, we use sticky flat tape lead weights (from the tire store), and line the shifter shaft with them. usually three layers and two inches in length. duct tape to make sure they dont come loose. its easier than removing the stock isolater from the stock shifter and it works very well.
This is unbeliveable! We got weights and isolators and aftermarket ***** and useless stop bolts....sheeeesh!! C'mon, Hurst...why did you sell us a noise machine?

Yeah, whats the deal here - one shouldn't have to mod his mod!
Does the Ripper make noise to? I was all set on getting a Hurst, but now i'm starting to wonder...
