C5 Corvette shifter...???
Exactly what broke, how do I find and replace the broken piece? Any ideas?

Theres the OEM Style that does NOT have any centering springs inside the shifter.
There are shifters that have springs in the shift body that force the shift handle in the Nuteral (3rd/4th gate)
ALL C5 and C6 Mnaual shifters mount to the same base the the exact same way!
If you dont want spring assisted centering, recommend that you get a OEM C6 shifter and lower box as an assembly. Its a quality piece, shortened throw and redisigned ergonomics for better feel.
I personally like the spring assisted shifter and have a KIRBAN Quick shifter.

Your transmission also has the spring that centers the shift handle in the center 3rd/4th gate. It just isnt all that robust. IMHO, its tooo weak. Thats why I purchased the kirban shiter with the added centering springs:

It because it is a ZO6.
If you have any C5 except ZO6,,, your bushings will be RUBBER. The rubber bushings get old, deteriorate and cause a sloopy shift feel. ZIP Products sells a nylon bushing insert. I highly replacing your old rubber bushings with replacement bushings for a more precise shift feel.
