Axle Seal
Hi
Does anyone know what this thing is that looks like an O-Ring? I am changing out the clutch and noticed one of the Diff seals was leaking so I am going to replace both. I noticed this green ring and it is split, is that the way it's supposed to be? Chevy dealer did not have a part number.
Regarding the seal can I use a socket to put the seal in with?

THAT my friend is a metal keeper ring. Its suppose to be that way. If you feel down into the the CV joint hub, you will feel the groove that that ring snaps into. 
The seal is the RUSTY metal thing around that hole/..
Here are a couple of post for you to read and asorb... I did the C6 differential mods and it worked out FANTASTIC!

IF NOTHING ELSE, just do the seal replacement as outlined in the attached post.

If you have a large enough socket you should be ok. I used the recommended GM tool Kent Moore J-46405 for seating the seal and it worked perfectly. What great about the tool is not only is it the proper diameter but it has an inner sleeve that fits over the input shaft and keeps everything centered.
