The factory service manual states: "There is no service interval for the fuel filter replacement. Only replace a restrictive fuel filter." (page 6-1107) Pretty damn vague...
Aside from dirt, water is the biggest problem for causing fuel filter restriction. Therefore the lifespan of the filter depends on your environment(level of humidity) and the quality of fuel used. Replacement is pretty easy. Here is a link for the proceedure: https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...=123&TopicID=1. When I replaced mine at 12k miles it was considerably restrictive but I did not notice any increase in performance. I'm sure the pump was happy, though. Also, the filter is the pressure regulator for 99+ models which increases it's price to ~$80 if I remember correctly.
Some good posts in that thread. I'm not gonna worry about mine, there are a hundred other things that are more likely to go wrong or cause a problem with the car then the fuel filter so I'll just leave well enough alone. :yesnod:
had mine swapped when the exhaust went on aroudn 28k at teh time. figured maybe it would quite down the fule pump whine a bit. I didnt notice much of a differnece one way or the other though.
I think one of the reason there isn't any interval is where the fuel filter is located. It is not very easy to get to because it is mounted on the frame and the exhaust system needs to be removed. Since I was having the FLP header system added, it gave me the chance to change the filter since the stock system would be removed. And that system is heavy. One of the benefits, I think of the FLP system, is that if I need to change the filter again, all is needed is to remove the clamps and remove the X pipe section.
I know someone that waited until about 19,000 miles to replace his fuel filter and it was already half-way clogged and really filthy. If your fuel filter gets dirty and clogged to the point that it can't efficiently filter the fuel coming in, that is the best way to burn your fuel pump.
My advice is spend the extra $30.00 and replace it every 15,000 miles no matter what gas you use and no matter if it the filter is clean when you go to replace it. They only have a certain point of filtration and then after that, you aren't filtering out the bad stuff from the gas.
Thanks Shawn! I am going to take your advise and replace it now. Definately will not hurt. Might as well do it while my clutch is being put in.
