On an 02 5.3 suppose the others arent any different
Had it since new just gotten worse 160kmi
Switched up to syn oil @ 60k...sometimes the tick would get so loud people would look like
So in moving for once I had the oil changed somewhere as I had no time
Got the cheapie 29.99 dino oil special
Been in there 4k mi and almost never hear it when I do its very subdued like it was when it was new.
Perhaps the larger molecules of the dino oil provide more cushion?
Going to change it again with the same old cheap stuff to try it once more.
Why wouldn't you use Mobil 1 from day 1 --- isn't that the standard fill? You're problem was probably running dyno oil to begin with. You would be better off going to a higher viscosity synthetic.
With that said, are you serious, or do you really run non-synthetic in a C5 -- or is your post just a joke to get a response?
If this isn't about a C5 then who cares? It should be moved to the "Other cars" section.
Seems to me, "cuisinartvette" IS talking about an LS engine, and as MANY here have mentioned, they all seem to have that "sewing machine" clatter. So yes, it's relevant........
Thanks Leadfoot you are correct.
Syn or not I dont think it makes any difference. Maybe syn helps with longer term wear.. Changed every 3k from day 1
Vettes of the same vintage reported this issue also
Mobil1 is a decent oil,did many fills with it but the car wont pop if you dont use it.

Was ready for the "not a vette so....." please.
Ill wear some corvette socks next post lol
It would be better if you could be clearer next time about how you think your post relates to a C5 corvette, since your original post started to sound a bit "off the wall".
Again with that said, I don't see how a non-C5 engine running Dino oil really relates to a C5 engine. With the C5 engine built to much higher performance standards and higher oil stress levels, I'm guessing a C5 engine would "Pop" using Dino oil. Your thread would perhaps have been useful if comparing lifter noise with 10w40 synthetic vs 5w30 synthetic, but suggesting switching from synthetic to dino oil to quiet lifters in a C5 has no practical application that I can see.

What you really need to do is to pull the valve cover on the side with the "tick" and take a close look at all of your rockers. They are known to fail and send needle bearings through your system. Upgrade with a comp cams trunion rebuild kit.
I have 73 GM pickups and van's at work. We have had 3 or 4 that have had the tick, we just go ahead and change out the oil pump and it seams to solve the problem.
Thanks for the tip on the trunions due for a rebuild soon
I did that update on my car 2-3 years ago, "just because". It's not too hard of a job, but I had an arbor press to work with, and it makes the job a lot easier...not because you need the extra force of the press, but simply because working in a vertical motion makes the job a LOT easier to keep the parts lined up during the process.
