I am about to install a tranny cooler on my '97. Can anyone tell me if the return line to the tranny from the radiator is the upper or lower line off the side tank? I cannot tell for sure using the hot /cold touch method.
Thanks,
MILVET
I dont know the answer to your question, but was wondering if you could tell me where you got your cooler, what brand it is and how much it costs? Thanks for your help.
The upper line returns to the tranny. Put the cooler in off this so the fluid has already passed through the radiator before hitting the cooler & returning to the tranny.
I just got off the phone with my buddy with the tranny shop in WI, he suggest's that if you live in the deep south (like I do) to bypass the tranny alltogether. The weather stays warm enough to not need the warm up of the radiator, and the cooler by it'self should cool better when the fluid is not running thru a 205 degree radiator. I am gonna try it, he said make sure to plug the openings left in the radiator so no dirt gets in in case you go back to stock.
My B and M cooler is mounted in front of the AC condenser, driver side, with the hose connections facing outboard. Hoses go down and past the top of the spring loaded spoiler, had to enlarge the notch in the top of the spoiler so it would not hit the hoses when the spoiler pivots. Had to buy extra hose, 11/32 I think, from the Jegs catalog, because the BM kit did not have enough. You need 300 degree working temp, could not get that locally.
Keep in mind that if you bypass the stock radiator cooler, then when you are stuck in traffic there will be no airflow over the external cooler, and you may cook the trans. I spliced into the top hose as posted above, worked well.
Thinking of doing this too; where did you guys mount the cooler? In front of the radiator? Thanks :)
I mounted mine on top of the shroud beside the Vortex Rammer and cut out below it so when moving air flows thru without adding to the heat the condensor & radiator already deal with. At an idle this is not ideal as the fans do not pull air through it, but it works great staying 5-10 degrees cooler than the coolant. I did go through the radiator first but I am still told it will cool better stand-alone. The directions that came with it showed stand alone otion as well. I am going to try it and note trans temps to see if it is a problem, or if it does cool better.
