Long story short, with the help of my two year old and his desire to be like daddy, I'm now missing all of the keys for my car.
Not taking a chance on where they went to, I had the local dealer get me a new ignition cylinder and door cylinder with a new key pattern, but coded to my current bcm. I'm in the process if swapping them out and am curious if you absolutely have to have the old ignition in the run position to get the old cylinder out. I've pressed on the retaining tab with moderate force and it doesn't want to budge. Grateful for input by anyone who's been into one if these before.
Yes you need a key to turn the cylinder or it will not release.
The easiest solution would be to get a new housing as well. I would check price and availability before attacking. I think they are inexpensive. I recently saw a gm TSB regarding your situation. I just looked but wasn't able to find it.

I am trying to remember for sure, but I do believe you have to have the key in to remove the cylinder. I had to replace the ignition switch, which required removing they cylinder. It takes about 30 minutes to remove everything and get it back together.
