I drive a 2000 A4 w/mti intake and corsa exhaust with 3.15 gears(and on new GY RF's). I'm installing a TC some time this month but no one can give me the same anwser on which one to get. Some people tell me to get the Vig 2600(MTI) and others(Speed Demon) sware I won't be happy unless I go for the SY 3500. What should I get? I want the biggest increase in the 1/4 times while not totally ruining my drivability. Many say that its crap that you can't have a daily driver with a SY 3500 and others say I couldn't get off the line with one. Would a SY 3200 be a good medium? I've read a million post on this site and have never read more opposing theories then "what torque converter to install?". Does anyone really know? Please help. Thanks
Mike's advice is on target. Also think about what you want/need out of it. I know I want a setup optimized for the strip but the fact that I spend WAY more time on the street means that I really need a setup optimized for that (as long as it does "well enough" at the track.) I couldn't be happier with my SY+3.73s on the street (on runflats no less.) It's "tight" enough that I could go a lot looser with comfort. The SY+3.15 will be on the loose side.

I have the SY3500 and 3.15's and I'm very happy with my setup so far. I'm still in the break in period, so I really haven't gotten on it yet. But for driving on the street it's fine. The only thing that's different on the street is that you have to step on the gas a little harder to get the car moving or to climb a driveway. As for the parkway, I didn't notice a difference because of LS1edit. ;)
From what Ive read doing my research and the questions Ive asked, you should consider the yank 3000, and pro torque 2400 for your gears. Theres a ton of converters out there, but everyone Ive read about with these two has been happy. :yesnod: Do and archive search, and go over to Ls1tech.com, those guys talks tc's all day long. :yesnod: Goodluck
I'm about to spend a nice chunk of change on a TC and after this post I'm just as confussed as when I started. If no one wants to take the time to really explain the TC world to me can some give me a sight(TC 101?)?
If you want a TC 101 the best thing you can do is search, or go to www.converter.cc , this site will explain it ALL. Buying a TC can be a real PITA, so I feel you pain, let us know how it goes
I have the Vigilante 2800, recommended and installed by MTI. I'm pretty happy with it. At first it felt 'sloppy', but that went away in a day or so once I was used to it. From what I hear, the Vigilante 2800 slips high, so it's pretty close to a Yank 3000 or even Yank 3200.
If you're doing it, do the 3.42 gears at the same time. No more labor and only about $500 used.
buying the right TC "for you" is no different than buying a pair of tennis shoes.
If you want someone here to make the decision for you... they can't; because your particular driving style has more to do with it than anything else.
There is no right/wrong answer. You will need to read all you can, and make the decision based on what you deem is best for your particulars.
First, let me say I feel for you. I was in the same situation earlier this year. I tried at first to go about the selection in a scientific manner. No luck. Everyone has their favorite and why it is the best. I got tied of searching and getting more confused. The best way to satisfy yourself may be just to drive someone's car that has a aftermarket converter in it. I did not, but others have done this to see what to expect.
I will put my 2 cents in and more thoroughly confuse you!
I chose a Vigilante from my experience with them in Mustangs AND in seeing one run at the track, cracking off 11's (with bolt-ons and free mods) one run after another. I have a 3500 Vigilante, drives as stock when you drive normally and when you want the extra boost, you will get it with your right foot! No higher tranny temps ( I just got home, outside temp is 100, tranny temp is 185). I chose the higher stall because later on this year or next, I will have a different set of heads and a cam.
With the Vigilante, I am running >0.4 secs. faster in the ¼ mile (corrected to standard conditions) and as far as I can tell, nothing has suffered: mileage, driveability, etc.
