Default HUD not working

First I have searched found a lot of new installs, BUT

Is there a procedure to check what may be wrong, or do you just replace everything and be done with it?

The repair manuals I have are from a 97 and as ya'll know it was not offered then

Thanks in advance
Mike

Just beginning to research same question, I bought my '04 Vert this summer and it didn't work when I bought it. Dealer I got it from claimed that it's no longer even made by GM so might not be able to be repaired. That might be total BS, I don't know yet. They didn't know what was wrong with it so no idea if it can be repaired or needs to be replaced or what.

It doesn't bother me that much not having it, but on the other hand I wouldn't mind fixing it either... I'll be watching this thread and let you know if I learn anything in my research!

If it does not display at all I doubt you can figure out how to fix it and will need to replace it unless you get lucky that the connector to the IPC came loose.. If it is working but the pivot is broken you can fix it or replace it. If you look down into the HUD and can see any light then the pivot is broken. If you have a broken pivot I have a fix link I can provide.

Plenty of used and NOS HUDs out there from the vendors.

Here is guidance on removing the dah pad to access. It is pretty easy with many novices doing this with no problem. Just need to bag and tag all the fasteners so you know where they go.

That is what I was thinking, that I would have to replace it. Reading the old threads the price has come done a lot and you can buy everything except the cable connector

What circuit is the HUD getting its power from I can't find it listed

thanks mike

The HUD gets power and all interfaces with the IPC. The HUD cable just plugs into the top of the IPC. I doubt the IPC is the issue. I have seen IPC issues before but they are primarily with the DIC display. Never seen an IPC cause a problem with the HUD.

Mike, I know the guys on here can definitely steer you in the right direction. When I bought my 01, the HUD was not visible and only after researching this forum did I learn how to check it. First, make sure your display brightness is up to make it visible (if it is working). I had to literally remove my targa top to get my head high enough to look down into the display area and see that it was indeed lit up. That told me the mount was just broken so I then just had to research how to fix that. I hope your issue is just the broken pin issue and not something more drastic.

muntzwagon, again, check to see if yours is actually visible when you position your head in a way that you can see into the display area. You may have to move around a bit to catch a glimpse but if it's working at all then you'll be able to see the tell-tale bluish glow somewhere down there. Make sure the brightness is up enough. Good luck with it and make sure you read the posts here about the HUD because it will definitely help you.

Thanks much - not sure how I didn't see these comments till just now - I have the car buried away for the next month or so while it's bitter cold and snowy in my area in a warehouse space that I have, but I will definitely look for the light as you said. Seeing the how-to on removing the dash was very helpful - helped me be certain I'll be paying someone with better mechanical skills than me to do it!

If you don't want to do the dash your self, just make sure who ever does it follows that guidance so they don't screw things up.

You can really do it yourself! Just watch the "how-to" on dash removal (several times until you get a good feel for what you'll be seeing/doing), take lots of pictures if you need to so that you can refer back to them if you don't remember what goes where, and take your time. Before you know it, your dash will be out and you'll be a DIY guru! Trust me, you'll be VERY satisfied with what YOU did and might even surprise yourself and find out that you're better than you thought.

Excellent advice if you decide you can't do it, but you DEFINITELY need to make sure that whomever you get to do it KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING!!

My HUD on my 2001 just started to be be VERY dim and almost nonexistent even with the switch turned up all the way during the day at night it seems to be working fine. There's a daylight sensor correct?

There is a photocell but it is down internal to the HUD and not on the dash.
