Default Question about intake mainfold cleaning....

My C5 Z06's oil pressure sensor went belly up, so I'm in the middle of changing it. I ordered new seals for the intake manifold and want to clean everything up before I go back together. Is there a recommended cleaning solvent or detergent to use that won't damage the manifold or it's components? I've already removed the throttle body.

Thanks for the advice!

I just take it down to the $2.50 car wash and clean both inside and out with the pressure wash. Then blow it dry with my air hose and reinstall it.

use some brake parts cleaner to get all the oil and crap out of the inside and on the outside use some degreaser and a rag or nylon brush to get the dirt out of the crevices then spray it down with water and dry it out with compressed air or a blow dryer

Just soak it in a plastic tub filled with hot water and dawn dish soap.

Default Great suggestions!

Thanks fellas! I was concerned that using the wrong solvent or cleaner might adversely affect the composite material. I appreciate your prompt responses.

I thoroughly spray the inside and outside with Simple Green, brush rigorously inside and out with a scrub brush and then enthusiastically rinse with water.

Default MAP sensor?

When I do clean the manifold using any of the methods you guys suggested, will I damage the MAP sensor? I've been doing some reading in other posts which seem to indicate that the MAP sensor is difficult (if not impossible) to remove without damaging. I'd hate to do that.

You do not have to remove the intake manifold to change the oil pressure sensor. I used a ratchet extension, long socket with a flex head and completed the job in under 30 min. There are U-Tube videos showing how this is done. Yes it is tight in that area but well worth the effort.
Enjoy

I would take the map sensor out... it isn't hard to remove but after years of use the rubber gasket can tear when the sensor is removed... that's worst case scenario, you can buy a new gasket for about $10

Is there a special tool to remove the sensor?

no it just presses in and a tab on the intake holds it in place

I like the SG method as well.

OP: the map sensor is pretty resistant to liquids. After all, the inside of the intake manifold gets routinely contaminated with oil from the crankcase fumes during normal usage.

Not to question you, but I've read that it's the tab you speak of which is the problem. My understanding is that either the MAF sensor will break, or damage can be done to the intake trying to remove the sensor. Can the tab be pressed in with your fingers, or is it necessary to pry it loose with a blade or something?

I want to do it correctly 'cause I don't have gobs of cash available at the moment to replace parts. Tax time, you know....

no you can't pry the tab, it's pretty rigid and won't give and if you pry on it it would probably snap off... the sensor goes in and comes out at a slight angle... when reinstalling it put a drop of wd40 on your fingertip and lightly lubricate the gasket, that will help keep it from tearing when you press it in... once you get the intake off and look at it you will see what I'm talking about, it's really not a big deal

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the sensor uninstalled, would you? I did some moderate pulling & twisting at an angle, no joy.

just google ls1 map sensor... you have to pull it to the side just enough for it to clear the locking tab on the intake then it should pop right out

Thanks, Neutron, I'll do that. BTW, mine is an LS6. Should that make any difference?

Hate to keep bugging you; thanks for all your help. It has occurred to me after looking at some pics on Google that we may not be talking about the same thing. I'm referring to the large, round "bung" that the sensor attaches to, and has the HVAC and brake vacuum hose nipples built into it. It's about 2-3" in diameter and mounted on to the back of the intake. I think you are referring to the sensor which is mounted to it.

If all I have to do is remove the sensor from this bung, then I'm good to go, I think...

Thanks again!
