Picked up a 02 Z06 with 134k on the clock today. Wanted to see if anyone has an idea why it whines in 4th,5th and 6th. There is slight whine in 3rd and if you press on the clutch while in those gears the whine goes away.
The past owner thought it might be the diff but being there is no noise in 1,2 or neutral I have my doubts. The car is pretty much stock

If the differential is the source of the noise you would hear it in any gear. If you only hear the noise in 4, 5, 6 it is very likely coming from the transmission. If you have not already done so, drain and refill the transmission with new fluid. See if that eliminates or reduces the noise any. I would not drop and rebuild the transmission at this point in time. See if the fluid change improves the situation.

Hi, I had a very similar problem a few months ago. It started in 5 and 6 then gradually went up the gears to 3. I had the tranmission taken apart and installed a new 5 and 6 gear with synchros. It came back to me the same way I sent it in. I won't bore you with the long story but my work was under warranty and the dealership was smarter than me. I had said all along it was the differential. I finally convinced them to replace the differential and the problem was solved. Although you didn't say so you probably got the whine under throttle and it went away when you to your foot off the accelerator.
I would also have to say you most likely have a differential issue.
I also agree on changing out the trans ATF. You have a later trans and can use synthetic ATF. Your shifts will improve. While you have the car in the air, change out the differential lube. Make sure that you get a good GL-5 75/90 weight that has limited slip additive.
The differential whine has more to do with the amount of TORQUE that is being to the gear. In the higher gears, you are applying more torque / load on the ring and pinion.
