My base '99's ready for a new motor..what's better for keeping costs to a minimum, would you rebuild or simply get a fresh crate motor ?

Can't you get an ls6 crate motor for 3200 somewhere?

good info.. I don't know the best source for a motor locally in town(Las Vegas)..I need to do some homework. Then I'll need a good shop to do the switch.

Two options that come to mind
  1. Junk yard
  2. Rebuild

The Junkyard may have some LS1's in other models that you can pull, freshen up some gaskets and let her eat.

Rebuilding the short block is another option if you have a machine shop that does quality work in your area. Too bad I am on the east coast, I'd help you yank the motor out and save some $$$.

You can have the original engine rebuilt for about 1/2 the cost of a crate engine. I would stay away from putting in an iron block if I were you. I'd look on the parts for sale here and see if you could pick up a set of low mileage heads that someone has for sale and the rebuild the stock block.

I would rebuild with performance parts. I am curious why your '99 is ready for a new engine. Did something break?

My heads look pretty fresh, block's got high mi..I'm checking into a shortblock as well. Just not sure which way i'll go yet. Realizing a full crate engine may be out of the equation (too much $$$). I have scored a respected local mech that will do the switch for a great price.

The orig prob was the cam ate one lifter, we replaced just the one lifter. It ran good for an hour then started making worse noise than the first time.
