In replacing the pulley, I found it VERY tight area and hard to get a tool on the bolt. Any ideas or tricks would be very helpful to this 'ol timer.
Thanks in advance for any help.

deep socket and long ratchet worked for me but ratchet only gets a few clicks each time i done it from the top, bottom "might" be better?
Stroker Sorry but it is totally impossible to get a small 3/8 socket and rachet on the bolt. With the socket on the bolt, there is not enough space to get the rachet on the socket.
I dropped the A/C unit and pushed it back some to access the idler pulley.
You can see the top and bottom two bolts (one nut and one bolt at top) allow you to remove the assy. from the bracket.
Thank you Army Cop. Too cold to accomplish now , but your idea seems to make sense. Will attempt as soon as it is reasonable temperature resumes.

Army Cop apparently the hoses give enough play to allow the compressor to be moved so as to allow the require space for the pulley removable.
Army Cop Will moving the compressor give me some space in front of the pulley ?
Army Cop apparently you have misunderstood my request. My request was for information to replace the ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT IDLER PULLEY , not the Air Conditioning idler pulley. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Still looking for help on the original request for the Accessory Belt idler Pulley.
I just did this 2 months ago I used a socket with a 20" ratchet from the top I replaced the pulleys, belt tensioner & belt
it was tricky but got it done, my car is a manual trans not sure if it makes a difference?
Stroker 87 Thank you for staying in the discussion. Now I understand your operation. I did not previously. Where did you procure a 20 " rachet ? PLEASE let me know as I can fully understand your application. I had thoughts of making a tool to represent your 20 " rachet. Wow, I knew someone would come through !

I don't have ANY room in front of the pulley to get a SMALL socket and rachet on the Bolt. How could you get a DEEP socket and rachet on the bolt ?
Try again with the socket - I got mine off and I have the pain in the azz transmission cooling lines in the way...your manual trans does not have these lines. You have to take the bolt off basically blindly by feel. A normal socket is what I used.
From the top, you'll have to squeeze past the radiator hose or go under the water pump bell. See pics from my engine bay below:
shiny bolt in the center of pic? that's the idler pulley bolt.
see where my hand is coming under from? that's how I get to the idler pulley bolt.
If you need help PM me, I'm in New Haven, up the highway.

Janie, you are the man ! 1. I too, have the 99 Shop Manual. I confess that I was under the car once due to the COLD. I truly appreciate your fine assistance in this matter. I will due a closer look when it gets to a more reasonable temperature. Meanwhile I really would like to keep in touch with you regarding our cars.

the ratchet I used is a 3/8 torque ratchet, you might be able to use a short ratchet with a pipe as an extension

Army Cop #1. Please read my PM I sent to you. #2. I do all maintenance on the car. I have 2 other vehicles that I maintain. #3. When I stated that I " was under the car once " I meant due to the extremely cold temperatures, I am waiting to attempt the job when it is at least reasonable.
I hope this clears the air as to my statement.
Again, please read the PM.
