After 8,000 miles on my car, (local driving, no big road trips) the windshield glass looks like it has been sandblasted when I go into the sun about an hour before sunset. Very noticable when the light strikes it at that angle and looks like crap. Does anyone else have this condition??
Also some small scrathes that arc (wiper blade must have had some grit) and a few small chips. This glass seems mcuh softer than other Vettes I've owned. :cuss
I do clean the glass regularly and keep the blades clean also.
I got the same scenario on my windshield. My car is not a daily driver and never driven anywhere harsh. But I have the same issue, I clean it and polish it all the time with Zaino's glass polish. No luck filling in or removing those little pits in the glass.
Have a '01 with 6,000 miles and I have the same problem. With the sun low and right into the windshield it looks like its been sandblasted. Large number of small holes or chips. I've heard that car manufacturers have gone to thiner (less weight - more mpg), but this is too far.
The thing is that thicker glass wouldn't be any more resistant to the tiny pits than thin glass. However, it would be more resistant to cracking all of the way through.
Guys: If it is a distraction, call you insurance company and they'll
pay to replace it. It's a comprehensive claim and it is considered
a safety issue. I had a similar problem with a Supra and insurance
paid for windshield and rear hatch window. Also the moulding,
which costs twice as much as the glass.
Scruffy, I completely agree with you. I don't think these windshields were
made properly. I have never had a windshield in such bad shape
after so few miles in ANY car I have ever owned. (This is my 15th car)
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but the newer verts use the thinner glass windshield that the Z06 uses. Coupes are still fitted with the slightly thicker glass.
Utilize the warranty. After a few thousand miles my drver's side window had scratches all over it from going up and down. Something inside the door must have been scraping it, not sure why. The warranty covered it.
I've been noticing the same thing lately. Only when the sun hits it just right and then it blocks your vision. No amount of cleaning, scrubbing or polishing will remove it. It's been driving me nuts.
I really think that the abuse our windshields take is due more to the low ride height of the car, together with the lack of a frontend design made to deflect wind and debris. It is one of the tradeoffs you endure to drive a sports car. Put your windshield closer to the ground and don't have a squared-off nose to catch debris, what do you expect?
