I need to have my transmission taken out and some gaskets replaced to stop a leak... I've been told that once a transmission is taken out, that it never goes back in the same. I've heard that once it's taken out there always is some problems in the future. Is this true, or should I go ahead and get it fixed and hope no problems happen in the future shortly after?
I'd take it to a different shop if they told you that. How many miles on the tranny? If high, may as well have it fully rebuilt since your already paying labor for the removal and install

So that's false? It's doesn't have problems when it's taken out and reinstalled? Miles are 96,000 on an auto trans... How much do you think it would cost to have the trans rebuilt?
It is false. Dcollins is right , you should consider rebuilding it. I don't know the cost, partly because it depends on what needs replacing at the time. You can check on line with the likes of RPM Transmissions or TCI Auto Transmissions to see the cost of delivered rebuilt transmissions for various horsepower levels.
There is no reason it would act up after being removed and re-installed unless the shop isn't careful and gets dirt in it or does something stupid that damages it like force the converter against the pump instead of seating it properly.

Thank you! I'm just trying to figure out my best option as of my budget right now. To think it might break in the future and dump a bunch of money in it now, or wait to see if it even breaks...
Yes I'm sure I've taken it to two shops and both of them said some gaskets needed to be replaced and in order to fix them, they'll have to take apart the rear axle and trans out
I have been looking at transmissions and I know the trans in the car now is a 4L60e, I'm looking at tcuarto.com and they don't have the trans I need.. The one Im looking at is for a 98 c5.. The trans Im seeing on here is a TH350... Can that be put in place of the original?

Any shop owner or service manager who tells you that, is preparing to do a half-assed job on your car. Run, do not walk away from that shop. At no price, is 'that' a good deal. That you always have trouble after transmisson work, is not true. Many reputable shops who work on Corvette transmissions with long history of good service.
Do some research, and listen to those here on the forum for good advice.
Thought you said you have a' 98, not '78. 😊
That's a 3 speed auto, old school.
I'm confused on what I shoul be looking for, I couldn't find one on there and Im not sure which trans would work.. Does it have to be a 4l60e going back in?

Don
Thanks don, do you think I should take it to a Chevy dealership or a corvette shop?
Call RPM, they are a vendor here. At 100k, the trans (depending usage and care) is probably ready for a little refreshing. Better to pay a little more now than to pay to R&R it twice. I would stay away from the dealer. They know about as much about c5's as pep Boys. Rod

So should I just buy a new trans or rebuild it? How does the rebuild process work? Do they just keep the housing of the original trans and then just put new oem parts in?
