Well, it's happened again. My 4L60e has failed again.
The first time, the main seal came out. I decided that it would be a good idea to build the transmission before I added anymore power.
The shop I trust pulled the trans, and sent it out...
it went back in and was back on the street asap.
4000 miles later the 3/4 clutch pack was gone.
Simple! The tranny was under warranty. We did the pull and rebuild again.
3000 miles passed and now fourth gear is gone and the 1-2 shift is softer than a kitten.
Building a 4L60E for a performance application takes a huge amount of very specific knowledge. GM designed 6 different flaws into them that need to be addressed to keep the 3-4 clutches alive. We need to correct things like apply pressure, shift timing, clamping force, accumulation, and clutch/steel material. Most general transmission builders either don't know what these flaws are or they don't know how to correct them. We routinely get 4L60Es in my shop that have been built 4,5, 6, or more times. It's a shame that so many people blame the 4L60E because they've had too many build it wrong. It can be built to be a very capable transmission that can take a huge amount of power.
I looked on You Tube and searched 4L60E performance rebuild and watched some very interesting clips on what components that require up-grading. VERY INTERESTING!!!
YES,, the PCM Programming needs to be spot on for a reliable and properly shifting unit.. Especially is you have different rear end gear ratios than OEM stock..
