Default Mobil 1 and friction modifier

I feel stupid asking, but... should i still add the friction modifier when i drain and add Mobil 1 Synthetic to the diff? Being synthetic i'm guessing its good to go on its own, but better safe than sorry!

If I remember coorectly it alreay has modifier.

Here is all Mobil has to say about it:

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant provides the following advantages and benefits:

Outperforms all conventional gear lubricants
Maximum protection of differentials
Exceeds requirements of all automobile and truck rear axles
Minimizes wear and spalling in racing and high-performance cars
Subzero flow down to -50°F (-46°C)
Maximum resistance to breakdown from heat and extended high speed
Excellent limited-slip performance
Extended service life
Improved vehicle fuel economy
Indy 500-certified performance

If you put it in and you have noise on sharp turns you can always add a small amount of modifier from GM... Or you could just add RedLine because they very plainly state that the modifier has been added. I went with Redline.

Take the worry out of it....Go with Amsoil Series 2000 Gear lube :yesnod:
Fill it & Drill it!
:yesnod:
Modifier comes in the Amsoil lube.

Some people in the past thought that Moble 1 syn and the GM friction modifer didn't mix well and would separate in time. The "fix" was just to use Redline or Amsoil (that already contain the friction modifier in them) or go back with GM fluid with friction modifier.

And, just to throw a different spin on things, I've always used both the friction modifier with Mobil 1 in a total of 2 Vettes, 2 Trans-Ams, and 1 Z-28 with absolutely no problems.

It's just easier to drop in a bottle when adding the diff fluid than filling it, driving around listening for noises, adding a little additive when necessary, etc.

Have a good one, :seeya

I used Mobil One and GM Friction modifier and it made noise on parking lot turns. Redline was excellent , and so was Castrol synthetic syntec differential fluid. No noise at all with Castrol or Redline. I used FM in both applications.

That is not a stupid question at all! I have used Mobil One synthetic gear oil 75w-90 and friction modifier. I also did an E Mail and asked Mobil 1.com. Their answer was to use the friction modifier with Mobil One. The friction modifier % by service manual specification is app 6.25% (4oz for app 64 oz of gear oil) Redline and Amsoil have the friction modifier already in the blend, but I am not sure if it is a 6% blend. But you have to be careful which one you get of course.

With the later model C5s 99+, GM went with synthetic in the rear diff (this from C5-TECH).

So they are using/requiring synthetic with the friction modifier.

I'm just wondering what synthetic gear oil they are using... Mobil1?

Be careful of a couple of things. One is mixing brands (Redline not compatible with some others due to oil base) and putting in too much modifier. You will reduce or possibly eliminate your limited slip capability with too much modifier. 4% is about the right amount.

GM does use a synthetic rear end lube, but it's green, so I doubt it's Mobil 1.

Have a good one,
Mike

Do Not add anything to the Mobil 1 Motor oil. It is all you need.

He's asking about Mobil 1 differential oil/gear lube, not motor oil.

I used Mobil1 gear lube and added the friction modifier. Works fine.

Seriously though - thanks for the replies everyone!

As i already have some Mobil 1 laying around, i may try it with the FM and see how it goes. If i dont like it i'll prolly go RedLine.

The Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube works great in the C5 rear end. You do need to add the friction modifier, as others have noted. The GM specs say one bottle (4oz I think) for a full diff fluid change.

I've been running this for quite a while on the street and track (high temps, no coolers) and the diff continues to operate well with no chatter.

Last year one of the Techs posted that on some C5's, any synthetic dif fluid would start making noise in turns after a few thousand miles, no matter what brand of synthetic he tried and whether or not he used the GM modifier. He called GM and they told him to just use non-synthetic diff fluid if that problem occurred. However, best to have the dealer do that if you are under warranty, that way they can't blame future problems on you. Personally, mine has been doing great with GM synthetic fluid and modifier.
